Chapter 8 - The Blueprint Beneath the Floorboards

The words hung in the damp night air, freezing everyone in motion. Marcus's finger twitched on the trigger, his gaze narrowing as he processed David's confession. The federal agents flanking Marcus shifted nervously, their tactical gear rustling against the cold wind.
"You're bluffing, David," Marcus said, though a thin sheen of sweat glistened on his forehead despite the freezing rain. "The board verified the Zurich accounts three hours ago. There is no second ledger."
"The board is a ghost story I invented to keep you greedy bastards looking in the wrong direction," David replied smoothly, stepping backward toward the burning kitchen wall to shield me with his body. "My grandfather didn't run away with a fortune, Marcus. He hid the evidence of what this agency did to our families twenty years ago right under the floorboards of the nursery."
I stared at David in stunned disbelief. Ten years of marriage, ten years of sharing a home, raising our son in that very room, and he had hidden a ticking time bomb beneath the rug where Leo played every single day.
"David, how could you?" I choked out, my voice trembling as the rain soaked through my satin shirt. "Leo's room? You let our son sleep on top of a federal conspiracy?"
"It was the only place they would never look, Elena," David said urgently, his eyes pleading for my understanding. "Because the foundation of this house was poured with cement stolen from their black-site budget."
Miller, seizing the momentary confusion, suddenly lunged forward, slamming his shoulder into Marcus and sending both men crashing into the mud. The brown paper envelope slipped from Miller's grip, tumbling through the air and landing squarely in my muddy hands.

Before anyone could react, the heavy crimson wax seal cracked open in my palm, revealing a flash drive and a handwritten note in my grandfather's shaky handwriting.
