Chapter 13 - Collapse of the Grid

The explosion tore through the northern wall of the warehouse, sending a shockwave of dust, smoke, and shattered metal raining down upon the concrete floor. Through the swirling debris, emergency strobe lights flared to life, casting blinding red and blue beams across the cavernous room.

"Mom! Dad!" Leo screamed, scrambling off the wooden crate and running blindly toward us through the smoke.

David lunged forward, scooping Leo up into his arms and pulling him behind a thick concrete support pillar just as a hail of gunfire peppered the walls above us. Director Vance vanished into the smoke, her security detail scrambling to cover her retreat toward the back loading bay.

"Keep moving! Don't stop!" David shouted over the deafening roar of sirens approaching from Route 9.

I gripped the flash drive in my pocket, pulling Leo's small hand as we sprinted through the haze toward the shattered remains of the northern wall. But as we reached the exit, a familiar figure stepped out from the smoke, blocking our path with a heavy assault rifle raised and aimed directly at David's chest.

It was Marcus. His face was smeared with soot and blood, his professional facade completely burned away, leaving only raw, desperate survival instinct.

"Give me the drive, David," Marcus rasped, coughing through the thick smoke. "It's the only way any of us walk out of here alive. The entire district is surrounded by strike teams."

"You don't have anywhere left to run, Marcus," David said calmly, stepping in front of me and Leo, his weapon locked onto his former friend. "The encryption finished uploading three minutes ago. Every file, every black site, every name is already in the hands of the international press."

Marcus froze, his eyes widening in absolute disbelief. "You... you uploaded it?"

"It's over, Marcus," I said, stepping out from behind David with my head held high. "The syndicate died the moment you walked into my kitchen this morning."

Sirens wailed right outside the shattered wall as multiple federal vehicles swarmed the perimeter, their loudspeakers demanding an immediate ceasefire. Marcus lowered his rifle slowly, his arms dropping to his sides as the red and blue lights washed over his defeated face.
