Chapter 13: The First Birthday

The dining room table was transformed into a festive display of white linen, silver candelabras, and a magnificent three-layer chocolate cake topped with glowing white candles. Mrs. Gable stood nearby, beaming with undisguised pride, her hands folded neatly over her apron.

Julian stared at the flickering flames, his eyes wide with a mixture of wonder and reverence. He wore a crisp, tailored navy blazer and a clean white collared shirt—a far cry from the tattered, dirt-caked clothes he had worn the night he dropped his bread outside the Grand Horizon.

""Make a wish, Julian,"" Eleanor said gently, standing right beside him with her hand resting lightly on his shoulder.

The boy closed his eyes tightly. He didn't wish for toys, or clothes, or grand adventures. He simply wished that tomorrow, and every day after that, would feel just as warm and safe as this one. With a deep breath, he blew out all the candles in one steady puff.

Mrs. Gable clapped her hands softly, and Eleanor kissed the top of his head. ""Happy birthday, my son.""

As they cut the first slice of cake, Julian took a small bite and smiled broadly, declaring it the best thing he had ever tasted in his life. The room was filled with the sound of genuine laughter and quiet contentment, far removed from the cold streets and bitter struggles of the past.

After dessert, Eleanor presented him with a small, wrapped package tied with a gold ribbon. Julian carefully untied the string, peeling back the paper to reveal a brand-new leather-bound journal with blank pages, perfect for drawing and writing whatever stories he wanted to tell.

""So you can write your own path from now on,"" Eleanor explained softly.

May you like

Julian ran his fingers over the smooth leather cover, tracing the embossed edges with quiet reverence. ""Thank you,"" he whispered. ""I'll fill every page.""
