Chapter 12: A Quiet Evening at Home

The autumn leaves had fallen completely, leaving the branches of the courtyard oaks stark and bare against the darkening evening sky. Inside the townhouse, a crackling fire warmed the expansive living room, casting dancing amber shadows across the Persian rugs and polished wood.

Julian sat on the plush rug near the hearth, carefully taping his drawing of the tree and the two figures onto the inside cover of a brand-new hardcover storybook. Eleanor sat in the wingback chair nearby, reading a financial report by the warm firelight, though her attention drifted frequently to the boy playing quietly on the floor.

""Julian,"" Eleanor said softly.

The boy looked up, tilting his head. ""Yes?""

""Tomorrow is your birthday,"" Eleanor said, laying the report aside. ""Your real birthday. November twelfth. We never really had the chance to celebrate it properly before.""

Julian blinked, processing the thought. ""I never had a birthday cake before. Just candles on a piece of gas station donut.""

A sharp pang of sorrow pierced Eleanor's chest, but she replaced it immediately with a reassuring smile. She stood up and walked over, kneeling beside him on the rug. ""Well, tomorrow we are going to change that. Mrs. Gable is baking a three-layer chocolate cake with real vanilla frosting. And you can invite anyone you want from the center.""

Julian looked down at his shoes for a moment, then back up at Eleanor with his characteristic earnest intensity. ""Can it just be you and me? And Mrs. Gable?""

Eleanor’s heart melted. She reached out and brushed a lock of messy light brown hair from his forehead. ""Just the three of us. Exactly how it should be.""

The boy smiled, a genuine, radiant grin that illuminated his pale face and chased away every lingering shadow of the past. He leaned forward and hugged Eleanor around the neck, his small arms wrapping securely around her shoulders. Eleanor held him tight, breathing in the scent of cedar and clean cotton, knowing that the broken circle of their family was finally and permanently mended.
