Chapter 11: The Interrogation Room

The interrogation room at the county sheriff’s department was small, windowless, and smelled faintly of floor wax and stale coffee. A single fluorescent light hummed overhead, casting a harsh, clinical glow over the stainless-steel table bolted to the floor. Julian sat on one side, dressed in his rumpled white shirt without its jacket, his forearms resting flat against the cold surface.

Across the table sat Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator with tired eyes and graying temples, flipping slowly through a thick file folder containing printouts of digital logs, medical examiner preliminary notes, and signed corporate affidavits.

"Your digital forensics team pulled quite a harvest from your home network, Mr. Vance—sorry, Mr. Julian," Miller corrected himself, looking up with a sympathetic yet sharp gaze. "The off-site encrypted backup you triggered contained a complete ledger of every financial transfer, communication log, and firmware override initiated by Marcus Vance over the last three months."

"And the medical report on my mother?" Julian asked, his voice steady despite the exhaustion pulling at his eyelids.

Miller closed the folder with a soft thud. "Preliminary autopsy results confirm what you suspected. A massive, lethal dose of synthetic beta-blockers was introduced into her system, entirely bypassing her normal daily prescription. It wasn't a natural cardiac arrest. It was chemically induced homicide."

Julian closed his eyes for a brief moment, letting the official confirmation wash over him. Even though he had known the truth since he found the amber bottle in the master bedroom, hearing it spoken aloud by an officer of the law made the reality absolute. Eleanor was gone, murdered in her own home by the people she had sheltered and trusted.

"What about Clara and Marcus?" Julian asked, opening his eyes.

"They're both in holding cells down the hall," Miller replied, leaning back in his metal chair. "Marcus is already trying to cut a deal, attempting to pin the execution of the pharmaceutical tampering entirely on Clara to salvage his professional consulting license. Clara, on the other hand, is maintaining that you were the mastermind behind the corporate restructuring all along, claiming she was coerced."

A bitter, humorless smile touched Julian’s lips. "Typical. They spent months orchestrating a flawless conspiracy, and the moment the pressure hits, they tear each other apart."

"That’s usually how greed operates," Miller observed quietly. He slid a final document across the table toward Julian along with a black ballpoint pen. "We need your formal signature on the victim-impact statement and the final asset-recovery authorization to freeze all corporate accounts tied to the fraudulent power-of-attorney."

Julian looked down at the paper. The ink was dark, the lines straight and uncompromising. With a steady hand, he picked up the pen and signed his name, closing the chapter on a marriage built on deceit and a betrayal that had cost him the only family he had left.
