Chapter 7 - The Abandoned Gate

The rusted chain-link gate groaned in protest as the front bumper of Leo’s pickup truck nudged against it, scattering flakes of orange paint onto the damp autumn soil. Behind them, the black sedan slid to a violent halt, kicking up a massive cloud of dust that choked the air. The doors of the sedan swung open simultaneously, and two armed men clad in tactical black vests over their suits stepped out, raising specialized breaching tools with terrifying efficiency.
"We're trapped!" Leo yelled, frantically throwing the truck into reverse before realizing the logging road was too narrow to turn around without crashing into the ravine. "Art, tell me you have a plan, because ramming this gate isn't going to do anything except get us shot!"
Arthur didn't panic. He reached down to the floorboard near his feet, grabbing a heavy, mud-caked iron toolbox that had been sitting under his seat the entire time. He popped the metal latches with a sharp clack, revealing an array of rusted antique automotive parts and, tucked neatly beneath a oily rag, a standard-issue military bolt cutter with rubberized handles.
"Ramming it won't work," Arthur said calmly, opening his door and stepping out onto the gravel despite the shouting from the approaching tactical agents. "That gate is electrified. But the control box is mounted on the utility pole behind us."
"Art, get back in the truck!" Leo screamed, unbuckling his seatbelt and scrambling out of the driver's side to shield the elderly veteran.
"Save your breath, son, and take these," Arthur commanded, tossing the heavy bolt cutters directly into Leo’s chest. "Cut the secondary relay box on the left pole. Do not touch the red wire. If you touch the red wire, the seismic sensors inside the mountain will log a security breach, and the automated lockdown will seal the vault forever."
The lead tactical agent took a sharp step forward, leveling a non-lethal compressed-air rifle directly at Arthur’s chest. "Mr. Vance! Drop the toolbox and step away from the vehicle. This is your final warning."
Arthur stood tall, ignoring the weapon pointed straight at him. He looked directly into the agent's tinted tactical visor, a faint, defiant smile touching the corners of his mouth. "You're thirty seconds too late, son. The timer started the moment my key touched the hardware store counter."
Before the agent could pull the trigger, Leo slammed the jaws of the bolt cutter onto the thick electrical cable running down the utility pole. A deafening flash of blue sparks illuminated the dark tree line, plunging the entire clearing into total, sudden darkness as the high-voltage grid short-circuited.

In the pitch-black void, the heavy steel gate slowly swung open on its own accord, groaning as an automated emergency backup system engaged, revealing a dark, yawning tunnel carved deep into the heart of the granite mountain.
