Chapter 10 - Cornered in the Archive

The harsh, glaring beam of a high-intensity tactical flashlight swept down the corridor, pinning Arthur and Leo against the massive open steel door of the vault like insects under a microscope. Three armed tactical agents emerged from the shadows of the access tunnel, their heavy ceramic-plated vests and assault rifles held at the ready. The scarred agent leading them stepped forward, his expression an absolute mask of corporate coldness. He lowered his weapon just enough to look Arthur dead in the eye, a cruel smirk playing at the corner of his mouth.

"Impressive stamina for a man your age, Arthur," the scarred agent said, his voice echoing off the curved concrete walls. "Really, it is. But playing hide-and-seek with a multi-billion-dollar defense conglomerate is a losing game. Hand over the physical ledger from cabinet four, and we might let the kid walk out of here without a federal conspiracy charge."

Leo stepped in front of Arthur, shielding the elderly veteran with his own body despite the black-barrel rifles pointed squarely at his chest. "Don't listen to him, Art! The moment we give them that ledger, we're loose ends. They won't leave witnesses down here."

Arthur placed a heavy, reassuring hand on Leo’s shoulder, gently pushing the younger man aside with surprising strength. The veteran stepped forward into the harsh light, his posture upright and unbroken, radiating the quiet dignity of a man who had made peace with his own mortality decades ago.

"You can take the ledger, Miller," Arthur said, his voice remarkably steady and devoid of fear. "You can burn the files, silence the scientists, and bury this mountain under a few tons of concrete just like you planned back in '73. But you're too late to stop what's already in motion."

The scarred agent narrowed his eyes, stepping closer. "What are you talking about, old man? There's no one else out there. The grid is locked down."

Arthur offered a faint, knowing smile. "Before we walked into that hardware store this afternoon, I mailed a complete, notarized copy of every single document in this vault to thirty independent investigative journalism outlets across the country—timed to auto-publish the exact moment my encryption key was entered into a public database."

The agent froze mid-step, his tactical composure completely shattering for a fraction of a second. He frantically tapped his collar communication device, speaking in a panicked whisper. "Control, status report on external comms! Did any outbound data packets clear the local relay?!"

A burst of static crackled from the agent's earpiece, followed by a frantic, breathless voice: "Sir! We have a major security breach! Multiple encrypted data drops just hit major news servers nationwide! We're locked out of the mainframe!"

Leo stared at Arthur in sheer disbelief, the pieces of the veteran's elaborate, calculated trap finally clicking into place. "Art... you used the hardware store's public Wi-Fi to queue the upload."

Before the agents could react, the entire subterranean vault shook violently as a deep, rumbling explosion echoed from the entrance tunnel, sealing the escape route completely and plunging them into sudden, echoing silence.
