Chapter 3: The Audit Trail

The revelation hung in the air like a physical blow. Arthur’s mouth opened slightly, but no sound came out, his mind frantically trying to calculate the damage. The forensic audit Clara mentioned wasn't just a threat; it was a digital executioner waiting for a single command. If those files reached the board of directors at Pendelton Industries, his embezzlement of the company’s subsidiary accounts to cover his personal debts would become public knowledge within the hour. The crystal chandeliers overhead seemed to grow heavier, pressing down on his shoulders with the crushing weight of impending ruin. He stared at his daughter, seeing not a dependent child, but a disciplined adversary who had outmaneuvered him at every turn.

"You wouldn't," Arthur finally choked out, his voice cracking slightly before he caught himself and forced a semblance of paternal authority back into his tone. "That would destroy the family name. It would ruin everything I’ve built for decades." Clara’s gaze remained ice-cold, unbothered by his pathetic appeal to legacy and honor. She tilted her head slightly, studying him as if he were a particularly unpleasant specimen under a microscope. The crowd around them had grown restless, sensing that the dynamic of the argument had shifted dramatically, though they could not hear the whispered stakes passing between father and daughter.

"You destroyed the name the moment you started skimming from the employee pension fund to pay off your poker debts in Macau," Clara replied evenly, her breathing remaining perfectly regulated. "I didn't leak the audit, Arthur. I filed it with the federal oversight committee this morning before I put on this dress. By Monday morning, federal investigators will be walking through the front lobby of your precious headquarters." The sheer audacity of her action stunned him into silence. He had spent his entire life treating people as chess pieces, disposable and easily manipulated, only to discover that his own daughter had quietly dismantled his entire board while he wasn't looking.

Arthur’s hands began to shake uncontrollably, forcing him to clasp them behind his back to hide his panic from the watching crowd. "We can make a deal," he whispered, desperation leaking through his cracked veneer. "Whatever you want—shares, property, cash—we can transfer it tonight." Clara shook her head slowly, the silver necklace catching the light with every movement. "There is nothing you own that isn't already tied to a lien or a criminal investigation. You are completely bankrupt, Arthur. Emotionally, morally, and financially. And the worst part is, you did it entirely to yourself." She stepped past him, leaving the older man standing alone beneath the brilliant lights, a hollow king in a crumbling castle.
