Chapter 7: Whispers in the Library

Late that evening, after the heavy mahogany doors of the estate library had been locked from the inside, Marcus and Clara met among the towering bookshelves that smelled of old leather and polished wax. A single brass reading lamp cast a warm pool of light over the Persian rug, illuminating the tension etched into Clara’s face as Marcus relayed the details of what he had overheard during a phone call in the master study.
“They are planning to move you, Clara,” Marcus whispered urgently, keeping his eyes fixed on the doorway. “Victoria and her lawyer have arranged a transfer to the abandoned estate in Vermont. They plan to take Leo with them under the guise of a summer retreat, isolate him from you entirely, and then force you to sign away whatever remaining rights you have left under threat of total ruin.”
Clara felt the blood drain from her face. She gripped the edge of the mahogany table for support, her knees trembling beneath her black skirt. “They can’t do that! The contract allows me to remain employed as domestic staff as long as Leo is under five years old. It was the only condition I fought for when I agreed to carry him!”
“Contracts mean nothing to people who write the laws, Clara,” Marcus replied grimly. “Victoria has already instructed Vance to draft an addendum citing behavioral misconduct and insubordination from the gala incident. They are building a paper trail to justify your dismissal for cause, which would strip away every protection you managed to secure in the original agreement.”
“I won’t let them take my son,” Clara said, her voice dropping to a fierce, resolute whisper. Her dark eyes burned with a determination that transcended her fear. “I survived poverty, I survived the surrogacy clinics, and I survived watching him grow up calling another woman mother just so I could be near him. I will not let them ship him off like some piece of luggage.”
“If you run blindly, you will play right into their hands,” Marcus warned gently, stepping closer to place a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “The moment you step foot off this property with Leo without their permission, they will charge you with kidnapping. Vance has already prepared the police reports. You need proof, Clara. You need undeniable evidence of their systematic coercion, financial manipulation, and the original clauses they breached when they barred you from identifying yourself as his mother in emergency situations.”

“Where would I find proof like that?” Clara asked, looking around the cavernous library with its thousands of leather-bound volumes and hidden alcoves.
“In the master safe behind the portrait of Victoria’s grandfather,” Marcus said without hesitation. “The combination is stored on a digital tablet in the study desk. But accessing it will require timing, precision, and an immense amount of luck. Because if you are caught, there will be no second chances.”
