Chapter 10: The Hidden Truth

From behind the heavy velvet drapes, Clara held her breath, pressing her body flat against the cold glass of the windowpane. The beam of the flashlight swept across the Persian rug, danced over the mahogany desk, and illuminated the open wall safe behind the grandfather portrait. A low, annoyed sigh echoed through the study, followed by the heavy thud of soft-soled shoes pacing the floor. It was Marcus.

“Clara,” the elderly butler whispered urgently, keeping his voice low enough not to carry beyond the thick walls. “Are you in here?”

Clara stepped out from behind the drapes, her hands trembling as she wiped the cold sweat from her forehead. “Marcus, I’m locked out. The digital folder has a secondary password I didn't anticipate.”

Marcus hurried over to the desk, his face etched with anxiety. “Victoria must have updated the security protocols after the gala. Give me the tablet.” He rapidly tapped the screen, entering a complex string of numbers that he had memorized over years of handling the estate’s administrative emergencies. With a soft chime, the secure folder unlocked, revealing dozens of scanned documents, legal correspondence, and financial ledgers.

“Look at this,” Marcus murmured, scrolling down to a document dated two weeks before Leo’s birth. “It’s not just a surrogacy contract, Clara. It’s an amendment. Victoria’s husband added a clause stating that if any biological claim was ever made, the child’s trust fund would be immediately liquidated and transferred to an offshore account, leaving you with nothing and him legally untraceable.”

Clara stared at the glowing screen, the full horror of Victoria’s manipulation finally laying itself bare. They hadn’t just bought her child; they had engineered a legal trap designed to strip her of any possible defense if she ever tried to reclaim her maternal rights. But beneath the financial addendums, Clara noticed a small, encrypted sub-folder labeled *Private Medical Records - L.S.*

“Open that one,” Clara whispered, pointing a shaking finger at the screen.

Marcus tapped the icon, and a series of scanned hospital documents opened. Clara’s eyes scanned the lines of medical jargon until her breath caught in her throat. It wasn’t just a birth record. It was a genetic verification report proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Victoria had falsified her own medical history to register Leo as her biological child, using legal loopholes and bribed clinic administrators to conceal the truth from the state registry.

“This is it,” Clara said, a fierce, cold resolve washing over her fear. “This is proof of fraud. Not just against me, but against the state.”

“It’s enough to tear their entire empire down,” Marcus agreed quietly, plugging a small flash drive into the side of the tablet to download the files. “But we need to move quickly. If Victoria discovers these files have been accessed, we won’t have twenty-four hours before we’re erased.”
