Chapter 7: The Long Silence

The hallway seemed to shrink, the walls closing in as Elena summoned a final, desperate reserve of strength that defied her exhausted state. She gripped Caleb’s hand so tightly he winced, her entire body trembling as she strained against the overwhelming pain. The front door remained slightly ajar, letting in the faint, distant sound of approaching sirens wailing down the suburban street, cutting through the heavy afternoon air.

Martha worked with swift, practiced precision, guiding the fragile limbs into the open air with hands that did not shake, though her heart felt as though it might burst from her chest. With a final, ragged cry from Elena, the second baby slipped free into the quiet house. Martha caught the infant instantly, pulling the tiny body close.

Unlike her sister, this baby did not cry immediately.

A cold, heavy silence fell over the hallway, thick and suffocating. Caleb stopped breathing, his eyes locked on Martha’s back as she hunched protectively over the second infant, her fingers moving with frantic gentleness to clear the tiny airway.

"Martha?" Elena whispered, her voice cracking with a terror that transcended physical pain. "Why isn't she crying? Is she okay?"

Martha didn't answer immediately. She used a clean corner of a towel to briskly rub the baby’s back, stimulating circulation, her lips pressed into a thin, grim line. The security camera above the door blinked its silent green light, recording a family holding its collective breath, suspended between absolute joy and unimaginable grief.

"Come on," Martha muttered under her breath, a fierce prayer rising in her chest. "Come on, little one. Breathe."

For three agonizing seconds, the silence stretched like a snapping wire. Then, a faint, sputtering cough broke the quiet, followed instantly by a lusty, furious wail that echoed off the hardwood floor like music.

Elena let out a ragged sob of pure relief, collapsing back against the floorboards as Caleb buried his face in her neck, shaking with silent tears. Martha smiled, a profound wave of exhaustion washing over her as she wrapped the second infant securely and lifted her up to place her safely beside her twin against Elena’s chest.

"Two healthy girls," Martha announced, her voice trembling slightly. "You did it, Elena. You brought them both home."

Before Elena could fully process the words, the heavy front door swung wide open, crashing against the interior wall as three paramedics rushed into the hallway with heavy medical bags, flashlights, and oxygen tanks, filling the quiet space with urgent motion and sharp, metallic clatter.
