Three days later, the secure atmosphere of the family shelter was broken by an unexpected incident at the reception desk. A man wearing a nondescript gray jacket and mirrored sunglasses attempted to gain entry under the guise of delivering legal documents for Clara Vance. The alert front desk receptionist, trained to spot unauthorized visitors, requested identification and immediately notified the facility director. When the man realized the police were being called, he turned swiftly and disappeared into the afternoon foot traffic before officers could arrive.
Officer Miller, who had been assigned as a liaison to monitor Clara’s security detail, arrived at the shelter within minutes to review the security camera footage. She rewound the digital recording, freezing the frame on the man’s face as he briefly removed his sunglasses. Clara, standing beside the officer, gasped softly as she recognized the face. It was the same man she had seen lingering near her hospital parking garage two weeks prior, taking photographs of her car before she went on shift.
Marcus Holloway, who had arrived shortly after being notified of the security breach, viewed the footage with a grim expression. He explained that this was a classic intimidation tactic designed to rattle Clara’s nerves and force a settlement out of exhaustion and fear. Arthur Vance was clearly ramping up his pressure campaign, realizing the forensic audit was uncovering irregularities in his land acquisition filings faster than his legal team could suppress them.
