Chapter 2

The arrival of the police officers transformed the living room from a zone of terror into a controlled legal space. Officer Miller, a veteran with sharp eyes and a calm demeanor, stepped between Arthur Vance and Clara. She noted the red scratch on Lily’s cheek with a professional grimace, jotting down observations in a small black notebook while her partner secured Arthur’s hands behind his back for questioning. Arthur struggled against the cuffs, his face flushing a deep crimson as he shouted protests about trespassing and property rights, claiming the house and everything inside it belonged to his corporate estate. Clara stood her ground near the dark wooden table, the land title clutched tightly in her hand like a shield. She looked at Lily, who was still clutching her toy fox, and motioned gently for the little girl to retreat down the hallway toward the safety of the kitchen.

Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs, but her voice remained steady as she addressed Officer Miller. She explained that Arthur had stalked them for weeks, demanding access to documents that proved his illegal acquisition of family assets following the passing of Clara’s grandfather. The blue file, the one Arthur had screamed about just moments earlier, contained the original deeds and bank statements that unraveled the fraudulent transfer of property rights executed by Arthur’s legal firm.

Arthur sneered, claiming the documents were forged and threatening to sue the department for unlawful detention. However, the responding officers were unimpressed by his bluster. They had received prior warnings from Clara regarding Arthur’s erratic behavior, and the physical evidence on Lily’s cheek provided immediate grounds for a protective custody order and an emergency restraining order. As Arthur was escorted out through the double doors, his final warnings echoed off the hardwood floors, promising that Clara would never see a single penny of the disputed inheritance. Clara watched him leave, feeling a profound wave of exhaustion wash over her, knowing this was merely the first skirmish in a much larger war for their survival.
