Chapter 4 - The Road to Sterling Manor

The highway stretched out before Kristen’s sedan like a ribbon of dark asphalt under a bruised, gray sky. The heater in the car rattled, pushing out lukewarm air that barely cut through the chill settling into the cabin. In the back, Leo and Maya had finally fallen asleep, exhausted by the emotional turbulence of the morning and the sudden, jarring shift in their reality.
Kristen gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles white. Beside her on the passenger seat sat the manila envelope and the heavy brass key Arthur had given her.
"You're making the right choice, Kristen," Arthur had told her before she left the apartment. "The estate is legally airtight. But Eleanor is a proud, dangerous woman when cornered. She won't give up the keys to Sterling Manor without a fight."
As the city buildings faded into rolling hills and dense stands of autumn-stripped pine trees, the atmosphere outside the car grew heavier. The sky darkened prematurely, heavy gray clouds threatening a cold rain. Kristen’s mind raced through the implications of what was waiting for her at the end of this road. For years, she had allowed Eleanor to make her feel small, inadequate, and unworthy of respect. She had swallowed her pride, smiled through the backhanded compliments, and accepted the crumbs of hospitality tossed her way, all for the sake of keeping some semblance of family for her children.
Never again. The memory of Maya’s tear-filled eyes asking if she had done something wrong played on an endless loop in Kristen’s mind, fueling a quiet, unyielding fire in her chest.
Two hours later, the sedan turned onto a long, winding private drive flanked by towering stone pillars covered in creeping ivy. A heavy wrought-iron gate stood open, its ornate scrollwork rusted at the hinges. Beyond the gates, the road climbed gently through a thick forest before opening up into a sweeping circular driveway.
And there it stood: Sterling Manor.
The estate was breathtaking, a sprawling masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture built from dark gray stone, with tall arched windows, slate roofs, and grand brick chimneys. But even from a distance, the house looked occupied. Warm light glowed from several ground-floor windows, and parked right near the grand double front doors was a familiar, high-end luxury SUV.
Eleanor’s vehicle.
Kristen cut the engine, the sudden silence inside the car waking Leo and Maya. They rubbed their eyes, peering out the windows at the massive stone castle looming above them.
"Is this where we live now, Mommy?" Leo asked, his voice full of wonder and hesitation.
"Not yet, buddy," Kristen said softly, unbuckling her seatbelt. "Stay in the car, lock the doors, and don't open them for anyone except me or Mr. Pendelton. Do you understand?"
Maya nodded, gripping her blue paper flower tightly. "Be careful, Mommy."
Kristen stepped out of the car, the cold autumn wind biting at her knitted beige cardigan. She walked up the stone steps, her boots clicking sharply against the steps of the grand entrance. She pulled the heavy brass key from her pocket, slid it into the lock of the massive oak front door, and turned it. The heavy bolt slid back with a satisfying, echoing clunk.

She pushed the door open, stepping into a grand, high-ceilinged foyer lined with ancestral portraits. From down the long hallway, the sound of shattered glass and angry shouting echoed through the quiet halls.
