Chapter 9 - The Sterile Corridor and the Waiting Game

The double doors of the surgical intensive care unit swung shut with a quiet, pneumatic hiss. The smell of antiseptic and bleach hung heavily in the air, replacing the gasoline and rain of the streets outside. Jax sat on a rigid plastic waiting room chair, his large elbows resting on his knees and his heavily tattooed hands clasped tightly together.
Beside him sat Dylan, curled into a ball on the narrow seat, fast asleep from sheer exhaustion. His small chest rose and fell in steady, shallow rhythms, his bruised right hand resting safely inside the pocket of his oversized jacket.
Standing ten paces away, arms crossed and face set in stone, was the state investigator. She hadn't left their side since they walked through the hospital entrance, acting as both an escort and a silent jailer waiting for the clock to run out. The two police officers had stayed outside in the hallway, keeping watch like sentinels of a cold, indifferent system.
A young resident surgeon in green scrubs pushed through the double doors, wiping fatigue from his forehead with the back of his bare arm. He scanned the waiting room until his eyes locked onto Jax.
Jax stood up instantly, stepping away from the sleeping boy so as not to wake him. "How is he, Doc? Give it to me straight."
The doctor let out a long, weary sigh, stepping closer to lower his voice. "We managed to stabilize his blood pressure, and we cleared out the localized infection around the shrapnel site in his shoulder. But Mr. Miller... his body is failing him from years of chronic stress, pain management dependency, and sheer exhaustion. He’s sleeping under heavy sedation right now. He might have twenty-four hours, or he might have less. You need to prepare yourselves."
Jax closed his eyes for a long moment, pressing his thumb and forefinger against the bridge of his nose as if trying to physically hold his composure together. "Can we see him?"
"One at a time, for short periods," the doctor replied gently. "When he wakes up, you can go in."
The state investigator stepped forward immediately, her heels clicking sharply against the linoleum floor. "Doctor, as the acting state guardian for the minor, I need to know if the father is coherent enough to sign a temporary guardianship waiver before he passes."
Jax spun around, his face dark with suppressed rage. "Are you out of your damn mind? The man just came off an operating table fighting for his life, and you want to shove legal paperwork in his face?"
"Mr. Miller, my job is to ensure the child has a legally secure future when the worst happens," she replied sharply, though her voice wavered slightly under Jax’s intense glare. "If Mr. Vance passes without designating a recognized legal guardian, the boy goes straight into the emergency foster care grid by dawn."
"I am his uncle!" Jax shouted, causing a nearby nurse to turn her head sharply.
"You are an unrelated family friend with no blood tie and no updated court documentation," the investigator shot back coldly.
Before Jax could reply, a weak, raspy voice echoed from the doorway of the recovery ward behind them. The door had drifted open an inch.
May you like
"Jax..."
