Chapter 8 - The Police Escort to St. Jude's

The convoy tore through the twilight streets of the city, tires screeching around corners. Leading the pack was a marked police cruiser with its siren wailing in a rhythmic, urgent pitch, followed closely by Jax’s battered sedan. Trailing right behind them was the state investigator’s black SUV, refusing to lose sight of her objective.

Inside the sedan, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Dylan sat in the front passenger seat, clutching the old faded photograph of Mark and Jax so tightly that the corners were beginning to fray. He stared straight ahead through the windshield at the flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the wet pavement.

"Uncle Jax?" Dylan asked softly, breaking the long silence.

"Yeah, buddy?" Jax replied, keeping his eyes glued to the road while his hands gripped the steering wheel with white-knuckled intensity.

"Is Dad going to join us on the road trips again? When he gets better?" Dylan asked, his voice carrying a fragile, desperate hope that pierced straight through Jax’s tough exterior.

Jax swallowed hard, tasting copper in his mouth. He couldn't lie to the boy, but he couldn't crush his spirit either—not tonight. "Your dad is one of the toughest men I’ve ever met, Dylan. We served together in places most people only see in nightmares, and he always found a way back home. We're going to hold onto that hope until he tells us otherwise."

"Promise?" Dylan whispered, turning his head to look up at Jax with those big hazel eyes.

"I promise," Jax said firmly, glancing sideways for a split second to meet the boy's gaze. It was a heavy promise, one that weighed more than all his tattoos and scars combined, but he meant every single syllable.

As they rounded the final corner, the imposing brick facade of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital loomed into view. The police cruiser pulled sharply into the ambulance bay, cutting its siren but leaving its emergency lights flashing against the sterile white walls. Jax pulled right up behind it, killing his engine before it had even finished its idle cycle.

Before Jax could even unbuckle his seatbelt, the passenger door was yanked open. It wasn't the police officer, but the state investigator, her trench coat swirling around her ankles as she leaned into the car.

"Mr. Miller, listen to me very carefully," she said, her voice dropping all pretense of bureaucracy and turning fiercely pragmatic. "I spoke with the hospital supervisor on my radio. Mr. Vance is in surgery right now. They are allowing family in. But the moment those doors open, social services takes temporary custody of the boy. That is non-negotiable."

Jax unbuckled, stepped out of the car, and slammed the door shut with a resounding bang that echoed off the concrete pillars of the ambulance bay. He leaned down, bringing his face level with the investigator's, his dark eyes burning with unfiltered fury.

"You listen to me, lady," Jax growled low enough that only she could hear. "If you try to rip that boy away from his father’s hospital bed while Mark is fighting for his life, you will find out exactly what kind of man I used to be before I traded my boots for a wrench. Now, step aside."
