Chapter 2 - The Red Eye of Truth

The mechanical hum of the motorized dome camera above sounded deafening in the charged silence of the foyer. Clara’s grip on the hand-painted ceramic vase loosened fractionally, the emerald green satin of her dress rustling as her chest rose and fell in shallow, panicked breaths. Julian’s arm remained outstretched, his finger still pointing accusingly, but his eyes had completely lost their fierce, protective focus. They were locked onto the small, dark lens rotating smoothly on its pivot, pointing directly down at the top of the stairs where Clara had stood just moments before.

"Turn it off," Clara whispered, her voice dropping an octave as she stared at her husband with wide, pleading eyes. "Julian, override the system right now. You know what that footage is going to show."

Julian swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing sharply beneath the collar of his black button-down shirt. He didn't answer her. Instead, his gaze flicked down toward Maya, who stood clutching little Leo tightly against her chunky black sweater. Maya’s tears had stopped, replaced by a cold, terrifying stillness. The despair in her eyes had hardened into a sharp, unyielding resolve that made Julian’s stomach twist into agonizing knots.

"You don't need to turn anything off, Julian," Maya said, her voice eerily calm, cutting through the heavy air like broken glass. "The truth doesn't need your permission to exist anymore. It’s already recorded, isn't it? Every single cruel word, every malicious shove, saved in crystal-clear high definition on your private home server."

"Maya, let's not act rashly," Julian stammered, taking a cautious step backward, his hands held up in a placating gesture. "We are a family. We can handle this internally. You don't need to involve outsiders, and you certainly don't need to look at the logs."

"A family?" Maya let out a dry, humorless laugh that echoed off the hardwood floors. "Is that what you call a house where my child is treated like an obstacle to be discarded? Where I am treated like a ghost?"

Clara’s defensive posture returned in an instant, her chin lifting as she recovered her composure. She shifted her weight, the decorative vase held securely once more.

"You think a machine is going to save you, little helper?" Clara sneered, stepping closer to the edge of the stairwell. "Julian owns the company that built this security network. He holds the admin keys. That footage will disappear before you can even blink."

Julian shot a frantic look at Clara, shaking his head imperceptibly, but it was already too late. Maya had pulled her phone from her blue jean pocket with one steady hand, her thumb swiping across the screen.

"He might own the local drive," Maya murmured, her eyes fixed on her glowing screen as a notification popped up. "But I synced the cloud backups to my personal device the day I took this job."

Julian lunged forward, his face draining of all color as he desperately reached for her phone.
