Chapter 1 - The Descent from Grace

The tension in the sunlit foyer was thick enough to suffocate everyone present. Clara stood frozen at the top of the polished wooden staircase, her sleeveless emerald green satin slip dress catching the afternoon glare. Her bare shoulders tensed as she gripped the fragile, hand-painted ceramic decorative vase above her head, knuckles turning completely white. Below her, Maya’s chest heaved erratically. Maya stood in her chunky black sweater, blue jeans, and grey slippers, clutching little Leo tightly against her chest. The toddler’s face was red, streaked with tears, his tiny hands still trembling from the terror of his near-fatal fall.
Julian burst up the wooden stairs from the lower landing, his dark hair disheveled, the black button-down shirt clinging to his sweat-slicked back. He shoved past Maya, planting himself directly between Clara and the edge of the stairwell. His finger stabbed angrily through the air toward Clara’s face, his voice trembling with a mixture of disbelief and absolute fury.
"Why would you go after her?" Julian yelled, his eyes wide and bloodshot. "Are you out of your absolute mind, Clara? She was just carrying the laundry!"
Clara’s lips parted, her jaw tightening defensively as she looked down at her husband with cold, calculated disdain.
"She deserved to be reminded of her place in this house, Julian," Clara snapped back, her voice dripping with venom. "And so did that brat."
"You shoved my son!" Maya screamed from the bottom of the stairs, her voice cracking with raw, maternal agony. "I saw you! You deliberately pushed Leo toward the edge just to punish me!"
"Shut up, Maya!" Julian roared, spinning around to glare down at the woman holding his child. "You are nothing in this house! You are just the live-in help, so stop playing the victim!"
"I am his mother, Julian!" Maya wept, tears spilling freely over her cheeks. "Look at him! He could have broken his neck!"
Little Leo whimpered, his tiny frame shivering against Maya’s chest. With a trembling, tear-stained finger, the toddler slowly raised his hand and pointed straight up, directly toward the domed security camera mounted high on the pristine white ceiling.
"Heh..." Leo sobbed softly, his little voice echoing in the silent, tense hallway.

Julian and Clara both froze instantly, their eyes darting upward in sudden, unmitigated horror.
