Chapter 5: Through the Drainage Grate

The impact knocked the wind out of Clara, but adrenaline kept her moving. She scrambled out from beneath the avalanche of files, leaving Evelyn tangled in a web of medical charts and metal dividers. Sprinting down the remaining aisle, Clara grabbed Leo by the shoulders, lifting the boy into her arms as she charged toward the heavy exterior utility door.
The door was locked with a digital keypad, requiring a biometric scan or a master administrative code. Clara slammed her palm against the sensor, cursing under her breath when a harsh red light flashed, accompanied by an annoying electronic buzz.
"Access denied," an automated voice chimed monotonously.
Footsteps echoed from the main archive room behind them. Evelyn’s sharp voice cut through the damp air. "Stop them! Don't let them reach the perimeter!"
Clara looked desperately around the utility alcove. Her eyes landed on the manual override lever tucked behind a glass safety box near the floor. Without a second thought, she slammed her elbow through the glass, ignoring the sharp sting of breaking shards slicing into her skin. Her bleeding hand gripped the red iron lever and pulled downward with all her weight.
With a deafening pneumatic hiss, the heavy steel door popped open, admitting a rush of damp, cool night air mixed with the scent of wet earth and distant rain.
"Hold on to me, Leo," Clara gasped, carrying the boy out into the subterranean drainage trench just as security flashlights illuminated the doorway behind them.
They scrambled down the concrete slope of the drainage canal, slipping on the wet moss as distant shouts faded into the roar of rushing storm water. Clara didn't look back. She clutched Leo tightly against her chest, her black shirt stained with dirt and blood, her mind racing with a singular, desperate goal: they needed to reach the old highway diner three miles away before dawn, where an anonymous contact promised safe passage out of the county.

The rain began to fall in thick, heavy drops, washing away their footprints and blurring the edges of the concrete jungle that had held them captive. For the first time in three years, Clara felt a fragile glimmer of hope. But she also knew that Julian and Evelyn would never stop hunting them. The St. Jude Foundation’s roots ran deeper than any single building, anchoring themselves in the dark corners of a corrupt system that protected its own secrets at all costs.
