Chapter 10: Convergence at Dawn

The rhythmic click-clack of the train wheels droned on for hours, lulling the exhausted landscape into a monotonous blur of gray trees and distant hills. By the time the first pale fingers of dawn pierced the heavy morning clouds, the train began to decelerate, wheezing to a halt near the industrial freight yards of the neighboring county.
Clara and Leo climbed down from their precarious hiding spot, their bodies stiff and aching from the cold night air. They stepped onto the gravelly earth of the rail yard, blending seamlessly with the early morning shift workers and dock laborers who paid them no mind. They were miles away from the St. Jude Foundation administrative wing, but Clara knew that distance alone would not protect them indefinitely. Julian and Evelyn possessed resources that extended far beyond local jurisdictions.
They walked briskly toward the perimeter of the rail yard, heading for a public transit station where Clara planned to catch an early bus toward the federal district courthouse in the state capital. That was where Marcus Gable had instructed them to meet him if the data upload was successful.
As they emerged onto the bustling city street, the morning rush hour was already in full swing. Commuters rushed past in tailored suits and heavy coats, completely unaware of the dark underbelly of the medical industry operating right beneath their noses. Clara pulled the hood of her makeshift jacket over her head, keeping Leo close to her side as they navigated the crowded sidewalk.
Suddenly, the large digital billboard above the central plaza flickered, its regular commercial advertisement cutting abruptly to a live news broadcast. Clara stopped dead in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat.
The news anchor’s face was pale, her professional composure visibly shaken. A new headline scrolled across the bottom of the screen in bold red letters: ST. JUDE FOUNDATION FILES LEAKED: MASSIVE FRAUD AND UNETHICAL HUMAN TRIALS EXPOSED.
Clara stared at the screen, a surge of vindication washing over her. Beside her, Leo stopped too, looking up at the towering display with wide, uncomprehending eyes.
"Federal authorities have raided the St. Jude Foundation administrative headquarters early this morning," the anchor reported, her voice ringing out across the crowded plaza. "Documents published by investigative journalist Marcus Gable reveal decades of systemic behavioral manipulation, illegal child procurement, and financial laundering involving prominent political and corporate figures. Warrants have been issued for the arrest of foundation director Julian Vance and senior psychologist Dr. Evelyn Vance."

A collective murmur rippled through the crowd of commuters below the screen as people stopped to read the scrolling details. The untouchable fortress had finally been breached.
