Chapter 3

The digital chime hung in the confined air of the galley like a falling blade. The flight attendant stopped reaching for the coffee pot and turned back toward the counter. Her eyes immediately locked onto the illuminated screen of her company-issued tablet. Resting flat against the stainless steel, the device had suddenly awakened from its sleep mode, casting a harsh, pulsing amber light across her professional facade.
Across the screen, a bold corporate review warning alert flashed in crimson letters. It was an automated message generated directly by the airline's passenger feedback network, flagged with high-priority status by an internal algorithm that rarely triggered mid-flight. The flight attendant’s breath hitched. Her hand hovered momentarily over the glass surface before she tapped it to dismiss the notification, but the system locked her out, demanding immediate acknowledgment of a formal grievance filed under her specific employee identification number.
In the aisle, Maya remained motionless, her dark eyes fixed on the stunned expression draining all color from the crew member's face. The younger girl's silence was deafening. She did not need to gloat; the cold, hard logic of the digital age was speaking for her.
The flight attendant looked from the flashing tablet back down to the small girl standing before her. Her mind raced through the possibilities. How could a formal review be processed and flagged while the aircraft was airborne and out of standard cellular range? The airline’s internal network required a hard sync upon landing or access to the premium satellite Wi-Fi network that few passengers purchased. Yet here it was, glaring up at her with undeniable authority, questioning her conduct in real-time.

"What is this?" the flight attendant stammered, her voice losing its polished edge as panic began to take root beneath her skin. She tapped the screen again, but the alert only expanded, displaying a real-time transcript and a short video clip recorded just moments before.
The tension in the cabin shifted perceptibly. Passengers seated nearby began to notice the commotion, turning their heads to observe the rare spectacle of a crew member visibly shaken by a device meant to project control and authority. The illusion of absolute operational immunity was cracking, and the fissure was widening by the second. Maya simply shifted her weight, waiting for the inevitable realization to dawn upon the woman who had thought herself untouchable.
