Chapter 1

The grand hallway of Blackwood Manor echoed with a cold, unforgiving silence that morning, save for the muffled, desperate sobbing of young Clara. She stood clutching the heavy fabric of her white vintage dress, her braided updo slightly unraveling as she tried to anchor herself to the polished floorboards. Beside her, Eleanor, the stern forty-year-old woman in a dark Victorian-style dress with a high collar and a tight bun, maintained a posture of rigid hostility. Eleanor’s gloved hand gripped the handle of a scuffed leather suitcase with white-knuckled fury, trying repeatedly to shove the crying girl toward the heavy front exit.
“My father’s house!” Clara wept, her voice cracking with a mixture of heartbreak and disbelief as she looked up at the woman who had managed the household staff with an iron fist for the past five years.
Eleanor glared down at her, her face hardening into a mask of pure disdain. “Your father has a new family now. You don't belong here anymore.”
Clara wiped a tear from her flushed cheek, her chest heaving with natural, restrained breathing as she fought for composure. “He would never let you do this!” she argued fiercely, refusing to believe that her own flesh and blood could be discarded like unwanted trash.
Eleanor offered a cold, mirthless smile. “No,” she whispered, her voice cutting through the cavernous space like a razor blade.
Before Eleanor could push the suitcase forward again, a heavy latch clicked behind them. The massive dark wooden double doors slowly swung open, revealing Julian Blackwood. The forty-five-year-old man stepped out into the hallway wearing a dark tailored suit complete with a waistcoat, his expression carved from stone. He looked past Eleanor with a gaze so piercing it made the older woman instantly freeze.
“And who gave you the right to throw my daughter out?” Julian’s deep voice resonated through the corridor, carrying a chilling authority that sent a visible tremor through Eleanor’s frame.
Julian did not shout or lose his composure, but his eyes flashed with suppressed rage. He stepped closer, his heavy footsteps echoing deliberately against the wood. In his palm rested a small metal key—an antique brass artifact that looked entirely out of place in the modern world. He raised it slowly, demanding an explanation from the woman who had suddenly turned pale.

“Why was this hidden in my daughter's belongings?” Julian asked quietly, his eyes narrowing. “What exactly have you been hiding in this house?”
Eleanor stared at the key with absolute terror in her wide, trembling eyes. The silence that followed was deafening, signaling that the dark secrets of Blackwood Manor were finally coming to light.
