Chapter 8 - The Net Tightens

The cold, metallic click of zip-ties being pulled tight echoed sharply through the ruined ballroom as federal marshals secured Marcus Vance’s arms behind his back. The silver briefcase remained open on the mahogany podium, its pristine judicial injunctions fluttering slightly in the draft coming through the shattered doorway.
Marcus thrashed against the marshals, his face turning a furious shade of crimson as he was shoved roughly toward the exit.
“This is completely illegal!” Marcus screamed, his voice cracking with sheer panic as he glared back at Eleanor. “You set me up! You and Victor planned this entire thing before he even died!”
Eleanor watched her brother-in-law being dragged away without the slightest flicker of emotion on her aristocratic face. She calmly reached out and snapped the latches of Marcus’s silver briefcase shut, sealing his fraudulent injunctions inside darkness once and for all.
“Victor always said a thief will eventually hand you the key to his own cell if you just give him enough rope,” Eleanor said quietly to the empty space where Marcus had just been standing.
Arthur Sterling let out a long, shuddering breath, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. He looked down at the intern’s laptop, where the Director of Financial Oversight was still staring out from the screen with a stern, unflinching expression.
“Thank you, Director,” Arthur said, leaning toward the built-in microphone. “We have the primary financial records secured here on-site. When do you want us to initiate the full asset transfer back to the foundation’s main vault?”
The Director gave a sharp, professional nod through the video feed.
“Hold off on the transfer for another hour, Mr. Sterling,” the Director instructed firmly. “We’ve just intercepted a secondary digital transmission originating from an encrypted server inside the Swiss National Bank. It appears Marcus wasn't acting alone. He had an international wire queued up for a numbered account in Zurich, scheduled to execute the moment those injunctions were filed.”
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed instantly. She stepped closer to the laptop, her hands resting lightly on the edge of the podium.
“Whose account in Zurich?” Eleanor asked, her voice dropping into an icy register.
The Director paused, a look of profound hesitation crossing his features before he replied.
“That’s the complication, Mrs. Vance,” the Director said slowly. “The receiving account isn't registered to Blackwood Holdings. It’s registered under a private trust bearing your daughter-in-law’s maiden name—Clara Sterling.”
Arthur gasped aloud, taking a half-step back in pure disbelief.
“Clara?” Arthur stammered. “That’s impossible! Clara spent the entire evening screaming at Julian, acting like she had no idea about the offshore accounts! She played the victim to absolute perfection!”
“A masterclass in deception,” Eleanor murmured, her face hardening into a mask of cold resolve. She turned her head slowly to look at the intern standing frozen by the door. “Where is Clara right now? The federal officers took her out through the kitchen exit ten minutes ago. Which holding vehicle was she placed in?”
The intern swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he tapped frantically on his phone to check the facility tracking logs.
“She... she was placed in Transport Unit Four,” the intern stuttered, his eyes darting frantically across his screen. “The unmarked black van parked by the service courtyard.”
Before the intern could finish his sentence, a loud, muffled explosion shook the ground beneath their feet, followed by the distant wail of sirens echoing from the courtyard below.
Eleanor didn’t hesitate for a single second. She grabbed her black clutch purse, pulled out a secure satellite communicator, and sprinted toward the shattered doorway with a speed and agility that completely defied her seventy years.

“Arthur, get the encrypted drive,” Eleanor commanded over her shoulder as she flew past the splintered wood. “We’re going to the courtyard. Clara just made her move.”
