Chapter 2 - The Federal Intrusion

The heavy oak service doors slammed violently against the wainscoting, echoing like gunshots through the cavernous ballroom. Half a dozen men in dark tactical windbreakers bearing bold federal insignia poured into the space, their boots pounding against the imported Italian marble. The glittering crowd of elites scattered instantly like frightened birds, champagne flutes shattering against the floor in a symphony of crystal and panic.
Julian froze in his tracks, his arm still outstretched toward the glowing projection screen where the audio file hovered at ninety-nine percent. His mouth opened, but no sound escaped his throat. The federal team moved with terrifying precision, forming a perimeter that effectively cut off every exit from the grand hall.
Clara shrank back against the tiered wedding cake, her pristine white gown dragging through spilled red wine and broken glass. Her face was bleached of all color, her meticulously styled hair coming loose from its jeweled pins. She pointed a trembling finger directly at Julian, her voice rising in frantic self-preservation.
“I didn’t know anything about the offshore accounts! It was all him! Ask his mother, she has the whole paper trail right there on that screen!”
Eleanor remained entirely unphased by the chaos erupting around her. Her posture was ramrod straight as she stood beside the console, her hand resting calmly on the edge of the mahogany podium. She turned her head slightly to acknowledge the lead federal agent, a tall man with a scarred jaw and cold gray eyes who marched straight toward her.
“Mrs. Vance?” the agent asked, his voice clipped and authoritative. “I am Special Agent Miller, Federal Bureau of Investigation. We have a warrant to seize all digital assets related to the Vance Foundation liquidation.”
Eleanor gave a single, dignified nod. She reached down and tapped the enter key on the control panel, launching the master audio recording just as Agent Miller reached her side.
“You’re right on time, Agent,” Eleanor replied, her voice steady and resonant in the quieted room. “The primary evidence is queued up and ready for your forensic download.”
On the massive screen, the audio waveform finally hit one hundred percent, and a harsh, metallic click echoed through the ballroom's high-end sound system. The room held its collective breath as the unmistakable voice of Julian’s late father echoed through the speakers, detailing a secret codicil to the family will that Julian and Clara had spent the last two years systematically erasing.
Julian staggered backward, colliding heavily with a towering floral arrangement that crashed to the floor, showering him in white roses. He looked up at the screen with eyes wide with sheer terror.
“Turn it off!” Julian screamed, lunging blindly toward the console. “That file was corrupted! It’s a complete fabrication!”
Before Julian’s fingers could graze the keyboard, Special Agent Miller stepped directly into his path, drawing a gleaming pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt.
“Step away from the console, Mr. Vance,” Agent Miller commanded, his voice dropping an octave into dangerous territory. “You are under arrest for wire fraud, corporate identity theft, and the unlawful seizure of a federally protected estate.”

As the cold steel cuffs snapped onto Julian’s wrists with a definitive double-click, Clara let out a shrill, breathless shriek and bolted toward the kitchen exit, only to run straight into the chest of a second federal agent blocking the doorway.
