Chapter 4 - The Hidden Hard Drive

The silence in the laundry room stretched between them like a physical barrier, heavy and suffocating. Mark locked eyes with his wife, searching her face for any sign of panic or guilt, but he found only an unnerving, absolute composure. She held her ground, effectively blocking the only exit from the small room, her slender fingers resting lightly against the fabric of her cream silk blouse.
“Technology can be unreliable, Clara,” Mark said slowly, his voice dropping an octave as he kept his tone deliberately neutral. “Unless someone manually deletes the cloud logs from the master console in the basement. Then it becomes very consistent.”
Clara’s smile didn’t falter, though a subtle tightening around the corners of her mouth betrayed a fleeting moment of annoyance. She tilted her head slightly, studying him as if he were a specimen under a microscope in a laboratory experiment.
“Why would anyone need to delete anything, Mark?” she asked, her voice dropping to a smooth, honeyed whisper. “Unless you’re letting your imagination run wild because you can’t bear the thought that your sweet little angel has a destructive streak. It’s entirely normal for children to act out, but it’s entirely abnormal for a grown man to interrogate his own wife like a common criminal over a broken porcelain vase.”
“That vase wasn’t broken by a four-year-old child and you damn well know it,” Mark snapped, his restraint finally cracking as he stepped forward.
Before he could push past her to reach the hallway, a soft chime echoed from the living room—the sound of the front door opening and closing with a gentle click. Footsteps echoed lightly on the porch outside, followed by the sound of a heavy canvas bag dropping onto the entryway floor.
Clara’s eyes flicked toward the hallway for a brief second before returning to Mark with renewed intensity.
“That will be Detective Miller,” Clara said softly, a triumphant edge creeping into her tone. “I called him a little while ago to file a formal report regarding the missing financial documents from my late father’s estate. He mentioned he wanted to ask you a few questions about your recent bank transfers, too.”
Mark froze, the blood draining completely from his face. The financial documents were supposed to be locked securely in his home office desk drawer, a drawer that only he and Clara had the keys to.
“You called the police?” Mark whispered, horror dawning on him.

“Of course,” Clara smiled coldly, stepping aside to let him pass into the hallway. “After all, someone in this house has been stealing from my family trust fund, and since Lily is too young to write checks, Detective Miller is going to need a very long conversation with the head of the household.”
