Chapter 2 - The Glowing Screen in the Hallway

Mark pulled his smartphone from his pocket as he walked down the dimly lit hallway, the screen glowing with a sharp, piercing white light. The application icon for the home security network pulsed red in the upper corner, indicating a new event recording had just been saved to the cloud server. His thumb hovered over the notification banner, hesitation slowing his footsteps on the hardwood floor.

Behind him, the faint sound of Clara comforting a still-sobbing Lily echoed softly, though the tone in Clara's voice lacked any genuine maternal warmth. It was flat, rehearsed, and calculated to project innocence to anyone within earshot. Mark ignored it, stepping past the open doorway of the guest bedroom and heading straight toward the end of the hall where the laundry room door remained firmly closed.

He tapped the notification, and the display shifted instantly from the home screen to a live feed interface. A crisp black-and-white video window appeared, displaying the interior of the laundry room from an elevated corner perspective. The wide-angle lens captured every square inch of the tiled floor, the washing machine, the folding table, and the shattered pieces of Clara’s grandmother's antique glass vase scattered near the baseboard heater.

Mark stopped walking, his breath catching in his throat as he stared down at the small screen in the palm of his hand. The timestamp in the corner read 4:14 PM—precisely twenty minutes ago, during the exact window of time when both Clara and Lily had been unaccounted for in the main living areas of the house.

He pressed the play button to review the motion-triggered footage from that specific afternoon timestamp. The video began to roll smoothly, showing the empty, quiet laundry room bathed in the eerie gray light filtering through the high frosted window. For a few seconds, nothing moved except for the faint dust motes dancing lazily in the stagnant air above the dryer.

Then, the door handle on the screen turned with a sharp, mechanical click. The white wooden door swung inward, revealing a pair of slender feet clad in expensive leather loafers stepping cautiously across the threshold. Mark’s eyes widened in disbelief as the figure stepped fully into the frame, their face partially obscured by the downward angle of the wide-angle camera lens.

It wasn't four-year-old Lily who entered the room on the screen. It was an adult figure wearing a cream silk blouse that matched the one Clara was currently wearing in the living room. The person on the video walked deliberately toward the shelf holding the heirloom vase, reached out with both hands, and intentionally shoved the heavy glass object off the edge, watching it smash violently against the hard tile floor below.

Mark’s hand began to shake uncontrollably as he watched the recorded playback, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. But before he could press pause or inspect the face of the person on the screen more closely, the video abruptly glitched, turning into a wall of static before refreshing to show an empty, quiet room once again.
