Chapter 13

Julian didn't flinch. Instead, a twisted, bitter smile spread across his bearded face as he lowered the grey stuffed rabbit to his side. "You think you can protect them, Arthur? You're just a grieving widower playing detective with consumer electronics. My brother made sure the patrol units were twenty minutes away. No one is coming to help you."

"I don't need the police," Arthur said, taking a slow, calculated step forward.

Before Julian could raise his hands, the front door burst open with a resounding crash.

Deputy Vance stood in the entryway, his service weapon drawn and aimed directly at his brother’s chest. The harsh amber light from the streetlamps illuminated the absolute fury and betrayal etched across the policeman's face.

"Drop the toy, Julian," Deputy Vance shouted, his voice echoing through the quiet house with authority. "It's over. I'm placing you under arrest."

Julian spun around, his eyes widening in shock as he looked from the drawn gun to his brother. "You fool! They're hiding the truth! The boy is—"

"The boy is my nephew!" Deputy Vance roared, stepping forward and kicking Julian's legs out from under him with a swift, practiced motion. Julian hit the hardwood floor with a heavy thud, the grey stuffed rabbit flying from his grip and skittering across the room to rest against the base of the living room table.

Before Julian could recover, Vance holstered his weapon, dropped his knee into his brother’s spine, and slapped steel handcuffs onto his wrists with practiced efficiency. The metallic click of the cuffs echoed sharply through the room—a definitive sound of justice finally taking its course.

Arthur lowered the iron poker, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt as though it had been trapped in his lungs for a year. He looked toward the stairs, where Maya stood on the landing, clutching the railing with both hands, watching the scene unfold with tears of relief pooling in her eyes.

"You okay?" Deputy Vance asked, panting slightly as he hauled his brother to his feet and pushed him toward the broken front door.

"We're going to be," Arthur replied quietly, walking over to pick up the grey stuffed rabbit from the floor.
