Chapter 12
The sun dipped below the horizon, plunging the suburban cul-de-sac into deep, violet twilight. Inside the house, all the lights were turned off, casting the rooms in heavy, impenetrable darkness. Arthur sat quietly at the dining room table, a heavy iron fireplace poker resting across his knees. Across from him, Maya sat curled on the sofa, breathing slowly and evenly, her eyes fixed on the front window. Leo was tucked securely into his crib upstairs in the master bedroom, surrounded by extra baby monitors broadcasting static-free audio to a small receiver on the table.
They had staged the house to look empty. The front porch light was switched off, the driveway was clear, and the smart cameras had been deliberately toggled to 'silent mode' so no notification chimes would give away their positions.
Arthur’s phone vibrated silently against the wood table. He glanced down at the screen. A motion sensor in the backyard alleyway had tripped.
He stood up silently, motioning for Maya to stay back. His blue jeans rustled softly as he moved toward the hallway, his grip tightening around the iron poker.
A gentle, metallic click echoed from the back kitchen door. The sound of a latch sliding back into place.
Then came the soft, measured scrape of a shoe on the linoleum floor.
Julian Vance stepped into the dimly lit kitchen, wearing his dark wool coat, his silhouette unmistakable against the pale moonlight pouring through the window. In his hand, he carried the grey stuffed rabbit toy, holding it out before him like an offering to a phantom altar.
"Arthur," Julian whispered into the dark, his voice smooth and unsettlingly calm. "You shouldn't have hidden the boy. He belongs to the legacy. The bloodline requires correction."

Arthur stepped out from the hallway shadows, blocking the doorway to the living room. The iron poker in his hand caught a sliver of moonlight, gleaming with cold menace.
"You're trespassing, Julian," Arthur said, his voice steady and lethal. "And this time, there's no badge here to save you."
