Chapter 9: Echoes in the Dark

The harsh glare of the state police tactical flashlights cut through the dim interior of the glass-roofed pavilion, casting long, stark shadows across the wet marble floor. Federal agents moved efficiently through the room, securing the perimeter, taking statements from the trembling guests, and placing formal restraints on Arthur and Eleanor Vance.
Arthur offered no resistance as two troopers hoisted him to his feet. His designer suit was ruined, his face bruised and swollen, and his eyes stared blankly at the floor as he was led past the crowd toward the open exit. He didn't look at his mother, nor did he look at Julian. He was simply a ghost of privilege stripped of its armor.
Eleanor walked with her chin held high, though her hands trembled inside the plastic zip-ties. As she passed Julian and Clara, she paused for a fraction of a second, her cold blue eyes locking onto Clara with a venomous glare that spoke volumes.
"You'll never be safe," Eleanor whispered softly enough for only them to hear, before two federal agents gently urged her forward out into the cold rain.
Clara flinched instinctively, shrinking back slightly against her father’s side. Julian tightened his arm around her shoulders, his green eyes fixed on Eleanor's retreating back until she disappeared into the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers outside.
"She's gone, sweetheart," Julian murmured, his voice a steady, grounding anchor. "It's over."
Agent Vance walked over to Julian and Clara, her expression softening slightly as she took in the visible trauma on the young woman's face. She held out a small digital tablet for Julian to sign, confirming the transfer of the primary evidence drive.
"Mr. Vance, I need your formal statement regarding the acquisition of the master access card," Agent Vance said professionally. "And we’ll need to arrange protective transport for Miss Vance. Given the scope of this syndicate, we can’t guarantee her immediate safety until the board members are fully detained."
"She stays with me," Julian stated flatly, leaving no room for negotiation. "Every minute of every day until this goes to trial."
Agent Vance nodded slowly, recognizing the unshakeable resolve in the older man's eyes. "Understood. We have a safehouse secured two counties over. Federal marshals will escort your vehicle directly there."
As the agents moved to clear the remaining guests from the pavilion, Sheriff Miller walked over to Julian, extending a hand. The two men looked at each other for a long moment, acknowledging the unspoken pact they had forged tonight. Miller had risked his career, and Julian had risked his life, but the truth was finally out in the open.

"Good luck, Julian," Miller said quietly, shaking his hand. "You did the right thing."
Julian gave a curt nod. "Just doing what a father's supposed to do, Sheriff."
