Chapter 3: Fractured Loyalties

Arthur Vance gasped for air, his hand instinctively flying to his split lip as he pushed himself up from the mahogany table. His designer suit was stained with red wine, matching the dark purple bruises blooming along his jawline where Julian’s fist had connected. He squinted against the harsh overhead lights, his vision swimming before focusing entirely on the tall, bearded figure standing near the wall scanner.

"Kill him," Arthur choked out, his voice thick with rage and humiliation as he pointed a trembling finger at Julian. "Arrest him, Miller! What are you waiting for? He’s an assault-fucking-felon!"

Sheriff Miller didn't move. He kept his service weapon drawn, pointed safely at the floor, but his eyes darted nervously toward Arthur. The unspoken social hierarchy of the town was fracturing in real-time. For years, the Vance family had held the local police department in a velvet-lined chokehold through campaign contributions, silent favors, and strategic donations. But holding a roomful of high-society witnesses hostage with corporate encryption keys changed the arithmetic entirely.

"Keep your voice down, Arthur," Miller warned, his authority finally surfacing. "Nobody is killing anyone. Everyone stays put until I understand what’s on that card."

Eleanor hovered over her son, dabbing at his bleeding lip with a silk handkerchief she had snatched from a terrified guest. Her green dress rustled angrily as she turned her glare back toward Julian. "It's corporate espionage, Sheriff! He broke into our private archives, assaulted my son, and terrorized our guests. If you don't secure that card right now, I will personally call the state attorney general and have your badge by midnight."

Julian didn't blink. He stood tall, his green jacket zipped halfway up his chest, shielding Clara from the vicious glares being thrown her way by the frightened crowd. Clara remained seated on the floor, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees, her long brown hair hiding the dark bruises on her neck. She hadn't spoken since her whispered warning about the auto-purge. She knew her father too well; Julian didn't bluff. When he committed to a path, he walked it to the end, regardless of the precipice.

Marcus Sterling adjusted his cufflinks, stepping cautiously between the enraged mother-son duo and the armed sheriff. As the foundation’s legal counsel, Marcus was trained to smell blood in the water, and right now, the water was boiling.

"Let's not make rash threats, Eleanor," Marcus said smoothly, his eyes locked on the black access card in Julian’s hand. "Sheriff Miller is just doing his due diligence. However, Mr. Vance is holding illegal possession of proprietary encryption protocols. Under federal cyber-security statutes, possessing those files without authorization is a federal offense."

"Then call the feds, Marcus," Julian countered calmly, his voice steady and devoid of fear. "Let the FBI come down here tonight. Let them look at the financial ledgers linked to the offshore shell companies. Let them see what Arthur and the board members were doing to the interns behind the closed doors of the research wing."

A ripple of nervous murmurs swept through the crowd of guests. Several wealthy businessmen near the glass roof shifted uncomfortably, their wine glasses trembling in their hands. They weren't part of the inner circle running the day-to-day operations, but many had invested heavily in the foundation’s biotech initiatives, trusting Eleanor blindly.

Miller noticed the shift in the room. He lowered his weapon completely, holstering it with a deliberate click. "Mr. Vance," Miller said quietly, stepping closer. "Hand over the drive. Let’s resolve this without bloodshed. You can’t fight the whole system alone."

Julian looked down at his daughter, then back at the sheriff. "I’m not alone, Miller. The truth has a way of finding daylight."
