Chapter 9 - The Digital Ghost

The harsh red glow of the field reader illuminated Detective Miller’s tense features as he tapped frantically against the touchscreen. The apartment remained deathly still, the ticking grandfather clock marking the seconds like a countdown to an explosion.

“What do you mean, scrubbed?” Veronica demanded, her voice rising in panic. She grabbed the edge of the hallway console, her knuckles turning white. “Who has a secondary node? Arthur gave you the master key!”

Arthur stared at the device in the detective’s hand, his mouth hanging open in sheer confusion. “That’s impossible,” he stammered, stepping closer. “There’s only one master administrative key. I generated it myself through the corporate gateway.”

“Clearly, Mr. Vance, your technical competence is as flawed as your financial ethics,” Detective Miller retorted sharply, his fingers flying across the virtual keyboard of the field reader. “Someone with root access just initiated an automated purge protocol. Every single dollar is being funneled through a mixing service right now. By the time I log into the server backend, that money will be completely untraceable.”

Clara let out a sharp, breathless laugh, her posture straightening instantly. The panic that had gripped her moments earlier vanished, replaced by a cold, knowing smirk.

“You can’t fight a ghost, Detective,” Clara said smoothly, her voice ringing with misplaced triumph. “Some networks are built to withstand federal interference. My son may have made mistakes, but our family’s security was engineered long before you ever walked through this door.”

Veronica whirled around to face her mother-in-law, her rage boiling over. “You did this. You had a backup protocol installed, didn’t you? You set Arthur up to take the fall while you cleaned out the offshore accounts through a secondary backdoor!”

“Don’t be absurd, Veronica,” Clara sneered, adjusting her maroon dress with practiced elegance. “I am merely an elderly widow trying to protect her grandchildren’s future from a woman who has no respect for family traditions.”

“My children are terrified, my bank account is in the negative, and my husband is about to be indicted for federal crimes, and you talk about tradition?” Veronica’s voice shook with a fury so intense it left her breathless.

Detective Miller ignored the shouting match, his eyes locked on the amber data stream scrolling across his field reader. Suddenly, a new notification pinged on the device. A single text file had downloaded automatically from the purging server.

“Hold on,” Detective Miller said, holding up a hand to silence the room. He tapped the file open, reading the scrolling text lines carefully. His eyebrows shot up in genuine surprise.

“What is it?” Arthur asked nervously, taking a step toward the detective. “Did the trace fail?”

“The trace didn’t fail,” Detective Miller replied slowly, turning the screen so Veronica and Arthur could read the plain text message embedded in the file. “The funds weren’t sent to the Cayman Islands to hide them from the government. They were transferred into a completely different account twenty minutes ago.”

Veronica leaned in, her eyes scanning the bold letters on the screen. The recipient name listed on the transfer manifest was not Apex Holdings. It was an escrow account registered to a private residential property located three miles away.

“That’s our old house,” Veronica whispered, her blood running cold as she looked up at her husband. “Arthur... what did you buy?”
