Chapter 1 - The Broken Promise

The heavy leather belt hovered in the dim light of the suburban hallway. Seven-year-old Lily sobbed softly, clutching her bruised arm while standing over her younger brother, Leo, who looked up with wide, tear-filled eyes.
“He’s a boy! Give him the doll!” Lily cried out, her small frame shaking from the terror of the moment.
Before the leather could descend, the front door rattled violently. A suitcase hit the hardwood floor with a deafening crash, scattering dust motes into the air.
Veronica stood in the doorway, her long brown hair disheveled, her black long-sleeve top damp with sweat. Her blue jeans were stained with travel dust. She stared at Arthur, her eyes blazing with an unbridled fury that silenced the room.
“Put that belt down! Now!” Veronica screamed, her voice cutting through the tense atmosphere like a jagged knife.
Arthur lowered his arm slowly. He stood tall in his crisp black suit jacket, white shirt, and grey tie, his short dark hair neat despite the chaos. His mother, Clara, sat rigidly on the living room sofa in her maroon dress and white pearl necklace, her expression ice cold.
Arthur turned toward Veronica, his jaw tight. He pointed his finger forward, his face hardening into an expression of absolute authority.
“Veronica, apologize to my mother,” Arthur demanded sternly, his voice devoid of warmth.
Veronica ignored him. Her hands trembled as she pulled a smartphone from her pocket. The screen lit up, displaying the mobile savings app interface. The balance stared back at her in bright, accusing red digits: a negative twelve thousand dollars.
She stepped closer, holding the phone up toward the shocked man and elderly woman in the living room. Next to Clara’s feet sat an untouched birthday cake, its candles unlit.
“Diego—Arthur, why is our savings account empty?” Veronica asked urgently, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper as the truth began to suffocate her.

Clara stood up slowly, adjusting her pearls, and muttered something that made Arthur’s face pale instantly.
