Chapter 9 - The Spotlight from Above

The blinding white beam of the spotlight smashed down from the overcast sky, bathing the entire backyard in a harsh, theatrical glare. The hum of a heavy rotor blade suddenly drowned out the steady patter of the drizzle, shaking the wooden deck beneath Mark’s boots.

Victor Alvarez cursed loudly, squinting against the glare and pulling Leo closer to his chest as he looked up. Hovering fifty feet above the property was a matte-black federal surveillance helicopter, its side door open and a heavily armored tactical team pointing long-barreled sniper rifles directly down into the bunker entrance.

“Alvarez! Drop your weapon and put your hands on your head!” Agent Vance’s amplified voice boomed from a loudspeaker mounted on the helicopter’s skid. “You are completely surrounded by federal assets!”

Alvarez’s face twisted in fury. He realized in an instant that his window of escape had slammed shut. He didn't drop his pistol; instead, he shoved little Leo violently away from him, sending the toddler tumbling across the concrete floor of the bunker toward Sarah and Elena.

“Cover!” Mark roared, leaping over the wooden railing of the deck in a desperate, gravity-defying dive.

He hit the wet grass rolling, coming up in a tactical crouch with his MP5 raised, just as Alvarez brought his silver pistol around to fire upward at the hovering helicopter.

Crack-crack!

Alvarez’s bullets pinged harmlessly off the reinforced skids of the aircraft.

Before Alvarez could fire a second time, Mark squeezed the trigger of his submachine gun. A short, controlled three-round burst caught Alvarez squarely in the right shoulder, spinning the operative around and sending the silver pistol flying out of his hand into the muddy grass.

Alvarez staggered backward, hitting the concrete wall of the bunker with a heavy thud, sliding down into a sitting position while clutching his bleeding shoulder with his left hand.

Mark didn't stop moving. He sprinted the remaining twenty feet to the bunker entrance, dropping his weapon and throwing himself onto the concrete floor to pull little Leo into his arms.

“Daddy!” Leo cried out, burying his face in Mark’s soaked navy t-shirt.

“I’ve got you, buddy. I’ve got you,” Mark repeated fiercely, holding the boy tight against his chest while checking Elena and Sarah for injuries. Both women were shaking violently, but unharmed.

Agent Vance dropped down from the helicopter via a fast-rope rig, landing heavily on the grass beside the bunker with his pistol drawn. He walked over to the slumped figure of Victor Alvarez, kicked the fallen silver pistol away into the mud, and yanked Alvarez up by his uninjured arm with brutal efficiency.

“It’s over, Victor,” Vance said coldly, slapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto the operative’s wrists. “You’re going back to a black site where the sun doesn't shine.”

Alvarez spat blood onto the concrete, his eyes fixed on Mark with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.

“You think you won, Miller?” Alvarez laughed hoarsely, blood bubbling at the corner of his mouth. “Check your pocket. Check the pocket of your grey pants right now.”

Mark froze. He slowly pulled his hand away from holding Leo and slid his fingers into the right pocket of his grey trousers.

Inside, his fingertips brushed against a small, cold, metallic object that hadn't been there two minutes ago. He pulled it out.

It was a miniature master decryption key, pulsing with a blinking blue LED light—and attached to it was a micro-explosive detonator timer counting down from sixty seconds.
