Chapter 13 - One Hundred Percent

The sharp, synthesized chime hung in the damp air like a death knell. The amber light on the flash drive flared into a brilliant, blinding white, then clicked off completely.

Darkness rushed back into the clearing, punctuated only by the heavy rumble of diesel engines growing louder down the residential street.

“It’s done,” Sarah whispered, her voice shaking uncontrollably as she stared down at the dead piece of plastic resting in the mud. “The entire archive… it’s out there now.”

Agent Vance lowered his radio slowly, his face completely devoid of color.

“Not yet,” Mark said, his tone dead calm.

He reached down, picked up the flash drive from the mud, and slipped it into the pocket of his navy t-shirt. He didn't hesitate. He turned to Sarah and Elena, his eyes fierce and resolute.

“Get in the SUV Vance left down the block. Take Leo and drive north toward the Canadian border. Do not stop for gas, do not use your credit cards, and do not look back until you cross the bridge.”

“And you?” Elena asked, grabbing his arm with desperate strength, tears mixing with the rain on her face. “Where are you going, Mark? You’re not staying here.”

“I’m going to meet the convoy,” Mark said simply.

“Mark, that’s suicide!” Vance shouted, stepping forward. “There are twenty armed mercenaries in those trucks. You can’t fight an entire private army by yourself!”

“I’m not going to fight them,” Mark replied, a grim, calculated smile touching his lips. “I’m going to trade myself for the family.”
