Chapter 14

The autumn leaves fell in a golden cascade across the front lawn as November rolled into December, bringing with it the crisp chill of winter and the promise of the holiday season. The house was decorated with twinkling white lights along the roofline and a tall, fragrant pine tree standing proudly in the corner of the living room, adorned with handmade ornaments crafted by Lily’s small hands.
Mark stood on the front porch, sweeping away a stray pile of leaves with a sturdy broom, feeling a deep sense of gratitude for the simple routines of everyday life. The lawnmower sat safely stored in the garage, a silent witness to the day everything changed, but the terror associated with it had faded into a distant memory.
Sarah stepped out onto the porch, wearing a warm wool scarf wrapped around her neck, holding two mugs of hot cocoa. She handed one to Mark, leaning against his shoulder as they watched the neighborhood children ride their bikes down the street.
"Can you believe Christmas is only two weeks away?" Sarah asked softly, a content smile playing on her lips.
"Time moves differently when you're finally looking forward instead of backward," Mark replied, wrapping his arm around her waist to keep her warm against the evening wind. "How is your stamina holding up for the holiday prep?"
"Better than ever," Sarah said with a confident laugh. "My doctor gave me a clean bill of health at my monthly checkup this morning. My heart is functioning at one hundred percent capacity. The toxins are completely out of my system."
Mark kissed the top of her head, feeling an overwhelming wave of thankfulness wash over him. They had survived the unimaginable. They had stared down a darkness that lived within their own bloodline and emerged victorious through courage, truth, and an unbreakable commitment to one another.

From inside the house, the sound of Christmas carols drifted softly through the open doorway, accompanied by Lily’s cheerful singing as she arranged presents beneath the tree. The foundation of their home was secure, built upon honesty and fierce protection, ready to weather any storm that the future might bring.
