Chapter 10

The afternoon sun cast a golden glow across the backyard patio as Sarah walked out through the sliding glass door for the first time without needing Mark’s arm for support. She wore a soft green cardigan, her steps slow and deliberate, but steady. Mark stood nearby, holding two glasses of iced tea, ready to catch her if her strength faltered, though he knew she wanted to prove her independence.
Lily ran across the grass toward her mother, arms outstretched. "Mommy! You're walking all by yourself!"
Sarah knelt down carefully, catching the little girl in a warm, lingering embrace. "I am, sweetie. I'm getting stronger every single day, all thanks to you and daddy."
Mark walked over and handed Sarah a glass of iced tea, sitting down on the patio chair beside her. The air was crisp with the scent of autumn leaves, carrying the distant sound of children playing down the street. It was an ordinary suburban afternoon, yet every moment felt profoundly precious, earned through a crucible of unthinkable betrayal and quiet survival.
"Are you thinking about the trial?" Mark asked softly, watching her expression change as she gazed out across the lawn.
"Sometimes," Sarah admitted, taking a small sip of tea. "It’s hard not to wonder how I missed the signs for so long. She was my mother. She raised me after my father passed away. I trusted her implicitly with everything—my health, my home, my child."
"You didn't miss anything, Sarah," Mark said firmly, reaching out to cover her hand with his. "She was a master manipulator who hid her actions behind the mask of maternal care. No one expects their own mother to act like a poisoner."
"Lily saved us," Sarah whispered, looking over at the little girl who was now chasing a butterfly near the garden bed. "If she hadn't woken up... if she hadn't had the courage to speak up when Martha threatened her..."
"She’s stronger than either of us realized," Mark agreed, his voice thick with emotion. "We have to make sure she knows that, too. We can't let fear dictate how we raise her."
Sarah nodded, a determined light returning to her eyes—the very strength Martha had tried to extinguish, now burning brighter than ever. "We won't live in fear, Mark. This is our home. We built this life together, and no one will ever take it away from us again."

The quiet resilience in her voice washed away the last lingering shadows of doubt. They were battered, scarred by the events of the past month, but they were unbroken, standing together in the sunlight of a new beginning.
