Chapter 13: The Blueprint of Truth

By three o'clock in the morning, the hospital had transformed into a secure compound. State troopers guarded the entrances, and local detectives combed through every inch of the south stairwell, recovering a single dark wool glove left behind by the fleeing intruder.
Detective Miller sat in the chair beside Clara’s bed, holding a printed copy of a security camera still shot captured from the hallway corridor. The man’s face was still partially obscured by the hat and coat, but the high-resolution enhancement revealed a distinct scar running along the right side of his jawline—a detail that immediately triggered a match in the state law enforcement database.
"His name is Richard Vance," Miller said, looking over at Arthur Vance, the caseworker, who had just rushed back to the hospital after receiving the emergency alert.
Arthur went pale, staring at the photograph in the detective's hand. "Vance? That's... that's my cousin. He works as head of corporate security for Horizon Development."
The revelation sent a heavy, suffocating silence through the room. Helen gasped, putting a hand over her mouth, while Clara stared at the caseworker with a mixture of suspicion and cold realization.
"Your cousin was sent to silence my mother and recover the land registry," Miller said, his voice dripping with suppressed fury. "And when your mother passed away before he could get to her, he came after the children to make sure no one was left alive to contest the corporate title."
Arthur stumbled backward, gripping the edge of the rolling table for support. "I didn't know anything about this, Detective. I swear to you. I only took this case because my supervisor assigned it to me."
"Maybe you did, maybe you didn't," Miller said coldly, standing up to tower over the caseworker. "Either way, your cousin is still somewhere inside this hospital or on the grounds."
Just then, the door opened and Chloe, the pediatric nurse from the NICU, rushed into the room, looking utterly terrified.
"Detective, you need to come down to the NICU right now," Chloe said, her voice trembling violently. "One of the incubators... the oxygen line was tampered with. We caught the alarm in time, but the twins... they almost didn't make it."

Clara leaped off the bed, ignoring Helen’s protests, and bolted out the door toward the elevators.
"Clara, wait!" Miller yelled, sprinting right behind her.
