Chapter 12: The Emergency Alarm

The cold water hit the man square in the eyes, causing him to stagger backward with a sharp, suppressed oath. In the split second of his disorientation, Clara threw off the heavy blanket, scrambled over the edge of the bed, and slammed her small palm directly onto the red emergency call button mounted on the wall.
A shrill, deafening klaxon began to wail through the corridor, accompanied by flashing strobe lights overhead.
The intruder cursed loudly, realizing his window of opportunity had completely vanished. He turned on his heel and bolted toward the door just as the heavy footsteps of security guards echoed down the hallway.
"Stop right there! Security!" a male voice bellowed from the corridor.
Clara collapsed against the side of her bed, her chest heaving as she sucked in great lungfuls of air. Within seconds, Nurse Helen rushed into the room, her face white with panic, followed by two burly security guards in dark uniforms.
"Clara! What happened? Are you hurt?" Helen cried, dropping to her knees beside the little girl and pulling her into a tight, protective embrace.
"He was here," Clara gasped, pointing a shaking finger toward the empty doorway. "The man from the house... he came into the room."
One of the security guards sprinted out into the hallway to check the stairwells, while the other stayed behind to secure the perimeter of the room. Within five minutes, Detective Miller—who had been reviewing files in the administrative annex down the hall—burst through the doorway, his weapon drawn and his face set in a hard, dangerous line.
"Which way did he go?" Miller demanded, scanning the empty room.
"Toward the south stairwell," Helen said, her voice shaking as she stroked Clara’s tangled hair. "He got away before security could catch him in the stairwell."

Miller cursed under his breath, holstering his weapon and pulling out his radio to coordinate a lock-down of the entire hospital campus. "Nobody leaves this building," he barked into the receiver. "Lock down all exterior exits, secure the parking lot perimeter, and check the security cameras on the south wing immediately."
Clara sat on the floor with Helen, her small frame trembling not from weakness this time, but from the realization of how close the danger had come. The corporate operatives weren't just watching from a distance anymore. They were actively hunting. And they knew exactly where the children were.
