Chapter 5: The Weight of the Briefcase

The digital clock on the dashboard read 5:45 AM as Arthur’s car turned off the highway and into the circular drive of the Federal Courthouse downtown. The massive limestone pillars gleamed under the grey morning light, looking less like monuments to justice and more like ancient tombstones. Arthur killed the engine, but he didn't immediately get out. He sat in the silence, listening to the hum of the heater and watching the rain turn to a fine, freezing mist against the windshield.
In the back seat, Clara slept fitfully, her head resting against Lily’s small shoulder. The little girl was awake, staring out the window at the towering federal building with quiet curiosity. She didn't cry. The tears had stopped hours ago, replaced by a chilling, watchful stillness that no five-year-old should possess.
Arthur checked his coat pockets. The storage drive containing the master audio logs was secure. The dismantled door lock and the wiretap transmitter sat safely inside his leather briefcase. He had spent the last three hours drafting a formal affidavit detailing the illegal surveillance and the municipal conspiracy involving Judge Harrison. It was airtight, constructed with the meticulous precision of a man who knew he was burning his own professional bridge.
He opened the car door, letting in a blast of freezing wind. "Clara," he said softly, turning around in his seat. "We're here."
Clara opened her eyes instantly, the transition from sleep to hyper-vigilance instantaneous. She looked around the sterile federal plaza, her shoulders tensing. "They're going to arrest us for trespassing the moment we walk through those metal detectors."
"No," Arthur said firmly. "You have a right to seek redress in a federal court. I've already filed the emergency petition under seal."
They walked up the wide concrete steps together, Arthur carrying Lily in his arms while Clara clutched her canvas duffel bag like a shield. The wind whipped their clothes, carrying the scent of exhaust and damp stone. As they approached the revolving glass doors, two men in identical charcoal suits stepped out from the shadows of the portico.
Arthur recognized them instantly: state investigators attached to the District Attorney's office.
"Arthur," the taller one said, flashing a silver badge that lacked federal jurisdiction. "Your uncle wants a word before you do something you can't take back."
Arthur didn't slow his stride. He tightened his grip on Lily and kept his eyes fixed on the revolving doors. "Tell Marcus I'm already inside his jurisdiction's nightmare."

The investigator reached out a hand to grab Arthur's shoulder, but a pair of armed federal marshals stepped out from the security checkpoint inside the lobby, their hands resting casually on their sidearms.
"Step back, state police," the lead marshal commanded, his voice echoing off the marble floor. "This is federal territory now."
