Chapter 15: The Unbroken Threshold

The heavy oak door clicked shut behind Arthur with a solid, reassuring sound, sealing out the noise and chaos of the outside world. The interior of the house was warm, filled with the rich aroma of roasted chicken and the faint scratching of crayons against construction paper.
Lily looked up from the kitchen table as Arthur walked in, holding up a green crayon drawing of a house with a very large, very sturdy front door and a bright yellow sun overhead. She didn't say a word, but her small face broke into a wide, unburdened smile that reached all the way to her bright, clear eyes.
Clara walked out from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a clean dishtowel. She looked at Arthur, taking in the relaxed posture and the genuine smile he wore. The bruises on her face had completely faded, leaving behind only the quiet strength of a woman who had faced the full machinery of a corrupt state and refused to break.
"You're just in time," Clara said, her voice warm and steady. "Dinner is almost ready."
Arthur set his briefcase down by the coat rack, right next to Lily’s tan jacket and her clean, dry shoes. He felt a profound sense of closure settle over him, the kind of quiet peace that only comes after a long, exhausting storm has finally cleared.
"I wouldn't miss it for the world," Arthur replied, walking over to join them at the table.
