Chapter 8

The night air was biting and damp as Mark, Sarah, and Leo stepped off the back patio and walked toward the edge of the dense pine woods. Sarah insisted on coming along, refusing to stay behind in a house that had already been breached. Maya was safely tucked away with a trusted neighbor a few blocks over under the guise of an unexpected sleepover, leaving the three of them to face the dark forest alone.

Leo flicked on his heavy-duty flashlight, the bright beam cutting through the thick darkness, illuminating towering pine trees and tangled underbrush. The path was narrow, barely visible beneath a thick blanket of rotting needles and decaying leaves. Every snap of a twig underfoot sounded like a gunshot in the dead silence of the woods.

"Keep close," Mark whispered, leading the way with a powerful lantern in hand. He kept his eyes scanning the tree line, hyper-aware of every shadow and movement. "The old mill access road is just past the second ridge."

They walked in tense silence for nearly twenty minutes, the grade of the terrain sloping downward as the heavy, stagnant smell of damp earth and standing water grew stronger in the air. The canopy of trees overhead grew so thick that it completely blotted out the moonlight, plunging them into an inky blackness that only their flashlights could pierce.

"Are you sure this is the right way, Dad?" Leo asked, stepping carefully over a rotting log that blocked the narrow trail. His breathing was steady, though adrenaline hummed through his veins.

"The coordinates on the parchment match the surveyor's maps from before the fire," Mark replied without stopping. "Your grandfather spent years mapping every inch of this valley. He knew where every pipe and support beam was laid."

Suddenly, Sarah grabbed Mark’s arm, stopping him in his tracks. She pointed her small flashlight off to the right, toward a clearing among the trees.

"Look over there," Sarah whispered, her voice tight with alarm. "Is that... a light?"

Through the dense cluster of pine trunks, a faint, flickering yellow glow pulsed rhythmically in the distance, casting dancing shadows against the fog that rolled low across the forest floor. It wasn't a natural light like a campfire; it looked suspiciously like the beam of a high-powered flashlight moving methodically back and forth among the ruins of the old mill.

Mark extinguished his lantern instantly, plunging them into sudden, total darkness. He grabbed Leo and Sarah by the arms, pulling them behind the thick trunk of a massive oak tree.

"Someone's already down there," Mark hissed softly, pressing his back against the rough bark.

Leo peered around the edge of the tree trunk, his hazel eyes straining against the dark. Through the gap in the trees, he could see the skeletal remains of the old mill foundation rising like jagged teeth from the swampy ground. And moving directly among the crumbling brick walls were two distinct figures carrying flashlights, searching the exact spot marked on the parchment.
