Chapter 2

Leo froze, his fingers hovering inches above the cold metal object. The sudden silence in the garage was deafening, broken only by Maya's faint, hiccuping cries echoing from the doorway. Mark noticed the abrupt shift in his son’s posture and narrowed his eyes, stepping forward to block any movement.

"What are you looking at, Leo? Pick up that pillow and get inside," Mark commanded, his voice losing none of its previous authority, though a hint of uncertainty flickered in his blue eyes.

"Don't move," Leo whispered, his voice dropping to a breathless rasp. He carefully slid his hand past the red pillow, his fingers wrapping around the cold, heavy piece of metal. Pulling it free from the shadows, he revealed a heavy brass cylinder, intricately engraved with gears and strange geometric symbols. It looked impossibly old, completely out of place among the modern tools and camping gear cluttering the shelves.

Sarah gasped softly from the doorway, shifting Maya in her arms as she stared at the artifact in Leo’s dirt-smudged palm. "Where did you find that? That wasn't here when we cleaned the garage last month."

"It was wedged right under the support beam," Leo said, looking up at his father with a sudden, unsettling realization. "Dad, what is this? Did you put this here?"

Mark stared at the brass cylinder, his stern expression dissolving into something much darker and more complex. All the anger seemed to drain from his posture, replaced by a profound, chilling dread. He took a slow step backward, his hands dropping to his sides.

"Give that to me, Leo. Now," Mark ordered, but his voice lacked its earlier conviction. It sounded hollow, almost frightened.

"No," Leo said, backing away toward the workbench, clutching the cylinder to his chest. "You've been hiding things from us for months. Every time I ask about grandfather's old office, you change the subject. Now this appears in our garage?"

"You don't understand what you're holding," Sarah interrupted, her voice shaking as she stepped further into the garage, setting Maya down gently and telling her to wait inside. "Your father and I... we were trying to protect you from what your grandfather left behind."

"Protect me from what? A puzzle?" Leo challenged, tracing his thumb over the engraved symbols. As he pressed a small ridge on the side of the cylinder with his thumb, a hidden latch gave way with a sharp metallic click, and the top section slid open on its own.

Mark lunged forward with a sharp cry, trying to snatch the open cylinder from his son's hands just as a small, folded piece of yellowed parchment tumbled out from the inner chamber and fluttered slowly down to land right on the dusty concrete floor between them.
