Chapter 4

Clara stood up slowly from behind the mahogany desk, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She kept her posture stiff, refusing to show the fear that threatened to overwhelm her. Tamara crossed her arms, leaning against the doorframe, blocking the only obvious exit from the library.
"This is my mother’s room," Clara said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. "I don't need your permission to be here."
"Your mother is gone, Clara," Tamara replied coldly, stepping further into the room. "And with her departure, the sentimental attachments you hold dear are entirely irrelevant. The board of directors at Eleanor Vance Designs met this morning. They have already ratified the transition of executive power. I am the managing trustee now. Which means every square inch of this property, down to the books on these shelves, falls under my administrative oversight."
"You forged those documents," Clara said, her voice rising slightly. "My mother would never hand her life’s work over to a stranger."
"Stranger?" Tamara tilted her head, a sardonic smile playing on her lips. "I spent the last three years keeping this company afloat while your mother was consumed by her failing health and your endless demands. You know nothing of the sacrifices required to build an empire, Clara. You’ve been sheltered in this glass palace your entire life."
Before Tamara could advance further, the heavy library doors swung open again. Arthur strode in, his presence immediately shifting the balance of power in the room. He stepped between Tamara and Clara, his towering frame casting a shadow over the younger woman.
"That’s enough, Tamara," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register. "I’ve just spoken with Eleanor’s longtime legal counsel, Marcus Vance. He knows nothing about any recent amendments to the trust. In fact, he confirmed that the original documents naming Clara as the sole beneficiary are safely filed at his downtown firm."
Tamara’s composure faltered for a fraction of a second, her eyes narrowing as she glared at Arthur. "Marcus is an old man whose memory is failing. He doesn't keep up with corporate restructuring."

"He keeps up well enough to recognize fraud when he sees it," Arthur retorted, stepping closer to Tamara until she was forced to take a step back. "I suggest you tread very carefully. If you attempt to lock Clara out again, or if I find out you’ve tampered with a single asset in this house, I will personally see to it that you are investigated for financial misconduct."
Tamara held Arthur’s gaze for a long, tense moment before offering a chilling, measured laugh. "You think you’re protecting her, Arthur. But you have no idea what you’re stepping into." With that, she turned on her heel and swept out of the room, leaving the heavy oak doors open behind her.
