Chapter 15

The artificial rain hammered against the glass roof of the greenhouse, washing away the chaos of the night in a roaring cascade of water. Senator Hayes stood frozen, his hand still hovering over the terminal as the cascading water short-circuited the main console with a shower of blue sparks. The glowing screen flickered once, twice, and then went entirely black.
Director Sterling stumbled backward against a marble planter, his wet hands slipping on the weapon until it fell from his grip and splashed into the muddy earth below.
Arthur stepped forward, kicking the fallen firearm away with the heel of his shoe before grabbing Sterling by the soaked collar of his ruined bespoke suit, dragging him to his knees beneath the pouring water.
“The game is over, Sterling,” Arthur said, his voice ringing above the roar of the sprinklers. “The federal marshals arrived at the perimeter gates three minutes ago.”
Through the shattered glass doors of the greenhouse, flashing red and blue emergency lights painted the estate courtyard in brilliant, rotating strokes. Armored federal vehicles idled by the fountain, their personnel moving with disciplined, unstoppable efficiency.
Julian’s father slumped against the ruined terminal, burying his face in his hands as federal agents swarmed through the doors, their badges gleaming under the emergency strobes. Senator Hayes offered no resistance as the steel cuffs clicked around his wrists.
Elena stood quietly amidst the tropical ferns, the water soaking through the fabric of her white school shirt and dark tie. She reached down, picking up her white cane from the wet ground, and extended it with a smooth, practiced flick of her wrist. Tap. Pause. Tap.
Arthur walked over to her, his dark suit completely drenched, his severe expression softening just a fraction as he looked down at his daughter. He placed a heavy, protective hand on her shoulder.
“Are you alright?” Arthur asked quietly.
May you like
Elena turned her head, her single brown eye reflecting the flashing lights of the cruiser outside with crystal clarity. A faint, genuine smile touched the corners of her lips.
“I told you, Father,” Elena replied, her voice steady and unbroken as she took her first step toward the open doors and the dawning light of a new day. “I always know where the path leads.”
