Chapter 1

The high gloss of the hallway floor reflected the fluorescent lights, casting harsh glares over the polished tiles. Elena pressed her palms against the cold surface, her knees shifting forward with measured, quiet discipline. She kept her breath even, refusing to let the humiliation of the moment break her composure. Her right hand swept across the smooth ceramic, searching blindly for the familiar texture of her white cane. Above her, the murmur of the student body swelled and receded like a distant tide.

Julian dangled the aluminum shaft just inches from her outstretched fingertips, his blazer hanging slightly askew from his shoulder. He smirked down at her, shifting his weight from one foot to the other with casual cruelty.

“Make her crawl for it,” Julian mocked, his voice dripping with condescension. “Please give it back.”

Elena froze, her hand hovering in empty air. She turned her head slightly, her single uncovered brown eye fixed on the floor beneath his polished loafers.

“What will you do, tell daddy?” Julian taunted, crouching lower so his face entered her limited field of vision. “Go find it.”

A sharp intake of breath rippled through the gathered crowd. Before Elena could formulate a response, the heavy oak double doors at the end of the corridor swung inward with a deafening thud. Julian’s playful sneer vanished instantly, replaced by a sudden, rigid terror as a tall, imposing man in a dark grey suit strode into the hallway. Two other men in identical dark suits flanked him, their expressions carved from stone.

The tall man crossed the distance in long, silent strides. He stopped directly in front of Julian, towering over the teenage boy. The ambient noise of the entire hallway died instantly, swallowed by a profound, suffocating hush.

“Take your hands off my daughter's cane,” the man said, his voice a low, vibrating rumble of barely contained fury.

Julian swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. He clutched the white cane tighter. “She’s your daughter?”

The man did not blink. He reached out slowly, his fingers wrapping around the top of the aluminum shaft, and pulled it from Julian’s paralyzed grip with terrifying ease.
