Chapter 8 - The Interruption

Clara froze on the ladder, her hand gripping the cold metal rung so tightly her fingers ached. The front door swung open with a heavy creak, followed by the sound of firm, measured footsteps stepping onto the hardwood floor of the foyer.

It wasn't Eleanor. The footsteps were heavier, carrying a distinct, uneven cadence that Clara instantly recognized.

Arthur Vance had returned.

Clara quickly pulled herself back up, dropping the hidden floor panel into place with practiced silence and yanking the wool rug back over the seam just as a shadow fell across the dining room entrance. She stood up, brushing off her dark jeans and desperately trying to steady her breathing before the attorney stepped into view.

Arthur appeared around the corner of the dining table, holding a second manila folder under his arm. He paused, his sharp eyes scanning Clara’s flushed face and the slightly rumpled rug beneath her feet. A subtle flicker of suspicion crossed his features, though he masked it quickly behind his usual professional facade.

"I thought you would have started packing by now, Clara," Arthur said, his voice smooth and devoid of any warmth. "Your mother asked me to deliver an additional set of financial disclosures regarding the trust liquidation."

"You forgot something, Arthur? Or did you just come back to make sure I was following eviction protocol?" Clara retorted, keeping her voice steady despite the adrenaline hammering through her veins. She stepped away from the hidden panel, casually placing her foot over the exact spot where the latch mechanism was concealed.

Arthur stepped closer, placing the second folder onto the mahogany table next to the coffee cup Eleanor had left behind. He didn't answer immediately; instead, his gaze drifted downward, lingering for a fraction of a second on the displaced fibers of the wool rug before rising back to meet Clara’s defiant stare.

"Your father was a meticulous man, Clara," Arthur said softly, ignoring her question. "He believed that every family secret eventually clawed its way back to the surface, no matter how deeply it was buried."

"Is that why you helped my mother forge a second mortgage and execute a fraudulent trust amendment?" Clara asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "Because you're so devoted to preserving his legacy?"

Arthur’s expression hardened, the polite mask slipping to reveal a glimpse of genuine coldness beneath.

"I am devoted to the survival of this family's reputation, Clara," Arthur replied, stepping closer until he was standing just an arm's length away. "You have no idea what your father was involved in during the final years of his life. The financial entanglements, the questionable offshore accounts, the sudden influx of unrecorded capital that built this very house."

Clara’s mind raced. The hidden cellar beneath the floorboards—the rusted lockbox, the stamped canvas bank bags filled with old currency. It all suddenly snapped into a terrifying, coherent focus.

"The money in the cellar," Clara whispered before she could stop herself.

Arthur went completely still. The professional detachment vanished instantly from his eyes, replaced by a sudden, razor-sharp alertness. He stared at Clara, his breath catching as he realized what she had just revealed.

"What did you say?" Arthur asked, his voice dropping to a harsh, threatening whisper.
