Chapter 7 - The Secret Beneath the Floorboards

The cryptic words hung in the damp coastal air, refusing to dissipate. Clara stood frozen in the center of the living room, her eyes locked on her mother's rigid back.
"What did you just say?" Clara demanded, her voice cutting through the steady roar of the ocean outside. "What is buried beneath the foundation?"
Eleanor turned slowly, her expression instantly shifting back into its carefully guarded mask of maternal indifference. She smoothed down the front of her light cream cardigan, adjusted the collar of her light blue shirt, and picked up her leather folio from the sideboard.
"Nothing of consequence, Clara. Just the ordinary accumulation of decades spent maintaining an aging coastal property," Eleanor said dismissively, walking toward the hallway that led to the master bedroom wing. "I suggest you use your remaining time here to pack your personal belongings rather than chasing ghosts in the subfloor."
As soon as the bedroom door clicked shut down the hall, Clara moved.
Years of working as an architectural designer had given her an intimate familiarity with the structural blueprints of the beach house—blueprints she had helped her father update when she was still in college. She remembered seeing an anomaly on the original architectural schematics drawn back in nineteen-ninety-eight: a secondary access hatch located beneath the heavy oak dining table, masked by the tongue-and-groove hardwood flooring and omitted from all subsequent digital iterations filed with the county.
Clara dropped to her knees beside the dining table, her dark jeans scraping against the polished oak. She pushed aside the heavy wool rug, exposing the seamless expanse of dark wood planks. Running her fingers along the grain, she searched for the hidden seam she remembered from the blueprints.
Her fingernails caught on a microscopic indentation near the base of the left table leg. Pressing down with all her weight while sliding the plank laterally, she heard a faint, metallic click.
A section of the flooring popped upward by half an inch.
Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs as she lifted the heavy wooden panel, revealing a dark, narrow shaft descending into the concrete foundation beneath the house. A rusted metal ladder bolted into the concrete wall led down into absolute blackness, accompanied by the faint, damp smell of earth, old metal, and something metallic and sharp—like aged copper.
Reaching into her pocket, Clara pulled out her smartphone and switched on the flashlight beam, pointing it down into the dark cavity. The harsh white light cut through the gloom, illuminating a concrete-lined cellar that was entirely unmentioned in any legal document, trust agreement, or property appraisal she had ever seen.
At the bottom of the ladder sat a battered metal lockbox, its surface covered in a thick layer of dust, alongside several tightly sealed canvas bank bags stamped with the emblem of a defunct San Francisco bank from the nineteen-eighties.
Clara swallowed hard, her breath catching in her throat as she lowered herself cautiously onto the top rung of the rusted ladder.

Before she could descend another step, the sound of a key turning sharply in the front door lock echoed through the silent beach house.
