Chapter 13: The Cold Waters of Justice

Within minutes, the rotting pier of Whispering Cove was bathed in the flashing red and blue strobes of local and federal law enforcement vehicles. Searchlights swept across the dark, churning surface of the ocean where Elena had fallen, cutting through the swirling sea spray and fog.
Assistant District Attorney Sarah Chen strode down the wooden walkway, her long trench coat snapping in the coastal wind, flanked by two armed federal marshals. She took in the scene at a glance: Julian holding a trembling but safe Lily wrapped in his warm wool overcoat, and the open drop zone where the suspect had gone into the water.
""Coast Guard and marine units are sweeping the cove perimeter,"" Chen said, stepping up to Julian and placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. ""She won't get far in these freezing waters, especially weighed down by that dress.""
True to her word, less than twenty minutes later, a marine rescue inflatable pulled alongside the lower landing dock. Two rescue divers hauled a cold, shivering, and thoroughly defeated Elena Vance onto the wooden planks. Her long dark brown hair was plastered to her face, her designer black dress ruined by salt and mud, and her hands immediately cuffed behind her back by the waiting federal marshals.
As they dragged her past Julian and Lily, Elena raised her head. Her eyes weren't filled with fear anymore; they were completely dead, hollowed out by the absolute failure of her meticulously planned crimes. She didn't say a word as she was pushed into the back of a waiting cruiser, the heavy doors slamming shut with a finality that echoed the closing of a tomb.
Julian looked down at Lily, who was peering out from beneath the collar of his coat, her hazel eyes reflecting the swirling emergency lights. She wasn't crying anymore. The terror of the evening had given way to a quiet, profound resilience.
""Is it really over, Daddy?"" Lily asked softly, her small hand reaching up to touch his cheek.
""Yes, bug,"" Julian said, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her brown hair. ""It’s really over. We're safe now.""

Chen walked back over to them, holding out the small black flash drive that Julian had dropped onto the planks during the scuffle. She handed it back to him with a respectful nod. ""You put yourself in incredible danger coming out here alone, Mr. Sterling. But your daughter’s quick thinking... she saved more than just the evidence tonight. She saved your life.""
Julian pulled Lily a little closer, feeling the steady, strong rhythm of her heartbeat against his own. ""I know,"" he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. ""I knew it the moment she tried to save me from that cake.""
