Chapter 11: The Confession in the Wind

Julian stopped dead in his tracks, the words hanging in the freezing coastal air like jagged ice. *Niece?*
His mind reeled, connecting dots he hadn't even known existed. ""Niece?"" Julian repeated, his voice tight with disbelief. ""What are you talking about? You said you were Marcus’s sister—wait. Marcus didn't have a sister named Clara. He had a sister who...""
""Who died of an overdose ten years ago?"" Clara finished for him, her dark eyes flashing with a manic, desperate energy. She laughed—a sharp, grating sound that lacked any genuine humor. ""Clara Sinclair died a long time ago, Julian. I am Elena Vance. Marcus’s twin sister. The black sheep of the family who was written out of the trust fund while my golden-boy brother inherited the entire architectural legacy!""
Julian stared at her, the horrific truth finally crystallizing in his mind. Clara—Elena—hadn't just been a disgruntled business associate or a random grifter; she was Marcus’s estranged twin, fueled by a lifelong resentment of her family’s wealth and her brother’s success. When Marcus discovered she was embezzling from the firm to fund her criminal lifestyle, he hadn't just threatened to cut her off; he had discovered she was laundering money for a dangerous international syndicate. That was why Marcus had died in the cold waters off Maine—eliminated by his own sister when he refused to keep covering her tracks.
""You killed your own brother,"" Julian whispered, the horror of the realization draining the last remaining warmth from his veins. ""And then you targeted me, hoping to finish draining the firm and inherit everything through a fabricated marriage.""
""I didn't want to kill you, Julian,"" Elena said, stepping closer to the bound figure of Lily, the heavy steel wrench swinging lazily at her side. ""I genuinely liked you at first. But you became an obstacle. Just like Marcus. You started asking questions about the overseas ledgers, and you refused to sign off on the asset liquidation.""
Across the platform, Lily let out a muffled sob behind the duct tape, her small shoulders shaking as she struggled against the heavy ropes binding her to the wooden beam. Julian’s gaze snapped to his daughter, his heart breaking at the sight of her terror. He had to stall. He had to keep Elena talking while calculating a way to bridge the twenty feet separating them before she could use the heavy tool in her hand against his child.

""The flash drive is right here,"" Julian said, slowly reaching into his jacket pocket and pulling out the small black device, holding it up so the coastal light glinted off its metal casing. ""All the forensic audits, all the bank records, all the metadata. It’s all on this drive. Let Lily go, and I'll give it to you. You can take the money and run. No cops, no federal warrants.""
Elena stared at the flash drive, her eyes gleaming with greed and desperate ambition. She took a step forward, lowering the wrench slightly, her defenses fractionally dropping as the prize she had killed for came within arm's reach.
