Chapter 8 - The Hidden Seam

The screen of the phone went dark as the battery icon flashed a single red bar before dying completely. The backyard was plunged into an oppressive, heavy stillness, broken only by the cicadas buzzing in the oak trees overhead. Julian stared down at the dead black screen, his mind racing through two decades of manufactured grief, forged documents, and stolen identities.

“A hatch,” Julian muttered, looking down at the concrete tiles beneath his sneakers. “There has to be an access point.”

Martha moved away from the table, her steps cautious as she walked toward the shallow end of the pool where the water lapped gently against the blue tiles.

“Don't do it, Julian,” she warned, her voice tight with panic. “If you open that hatch, the feds will trace the power grid back to the house within the hour. The statute of limitations on the money laundering might be up, but accessory to federal evasion isn't.”

Julian ignored her. He dropped to his knees, pressing his palms against the sun-warmed concrete tiles, feeling for any imperfection in the mortar. His fingers brushed against a narrow, perfectly straight seam that ran parallel to the pool skimmer—a seam that had been masked for years by patio moss and outdoor furniture placement.

“He's been using our electricity,” Julian realized aloud, his eyes widening as he traced the thin line with his index finger. “The spike in the utility bills every summer... we thought it was just the pool pump running twenty-four hours a day to fight the algae.”

Martha crossed her arms tightly over her chest, shivering despite the ninety-degree heat.

“He monitored every room through the security system,” Martha admitted softly, staring out across the lawn. “He knew when you got married. He knew when you got divorced. He watched us from the dark while we sat out here drinking lemonade on Sunday afternoons.”

Julian grabbed the long black pool vacuum hose, using the heavy metal connector at the end as a makeshift crowbar. He wedged it firmly into the hidden seam between two concrete slabs and threw his entire weight against the plastic shaft.

With a loud, protesting crack of old mortar, the slab shifted upward by three inches, revealing a dark, yawning gap that smelled of damp earth, rust, and pipe tobacco.

Before Julian could peer into the blackness, a pale, withered hand shot out from the opening, grabbed him firmly by the wrist, and dragged him violently toward the dark edge of the pit.
